Hello From Southwest Mississippi
« on: September 11, 2012, 12:06:31 am »
Hello to all. I have been lurking on this board since April. I thought it was time I introduced myself. I am From McComb Mississippi. I have been keeping bees since March of this year. I acquired 2 Queen less hives at that time. I then captured a couple of swarms. After reading this board and getting a good understanding I was able to Make a swarm trap which has caught 1 swarm to date. Also with information I learned on this board I was able to do my first cutout.
It has been a very active first year. The List of things I know about bees is growing. However it’s not as long as the list of things I don’t know about bees. And the list of thing I thought I knew about bees keeps growing also..LOl

Thanks To all who have given there words of wisdom freely. I hope to one day be able to help newbies The way y'all have helped me.

Howdy Lazy W, welcome to the forum.  Are you a member of the Columbia club.  I go to the one in Laurel.  I am between Petal and Ovett.  Good luck with your bees.

Welcome to the board, Lazy W.  Looks like you've got some good neighbors over there!  Good folks here on the board, too!

Best wishes,

Very true Ed. I was just thinking, how much of an advantage it is to have forums such as this. Not only to meet your neighbors, but to learn from everyone across the world. My hats off to the old guys that did it for so many years on there own.

You've got that right.  We get the advantage of easy communication and sharing of information...they had periodicals to read once in a while and a buddy a county or two away to talk with once in a while (if that).  Jim Tew has had a couple of articles the last two months (Aug, Sept) in Bee Culture about varroar mites.  The first part of the article is a short glimpse into the pre-mite days and the limited communication at that time.   Good articles on mites, too.

I'm pretty sure I've found Bee Culture at a book store, but it seems spotty at best...if I did find it it was a large Books a Million or Barnes and Noble store.  Here is the their website... http://www.beeculture.com/  I think it's understood by most beeks that BC caters more towards hobbiests than to commercial beekeepers.

American Bee Journal on the otherhand seems to be geared more towards the commercial guys.  I like them both.  It seems, that ABJ tends to post more articles online as "freebies".  Here's a link to their website... http://www.americanbeejournal.com/

Both of them are good magazines.
