Title: Finally getting bees again!!!
Post by: dennis2021 on July 20, 2013, 08:38:36 am
After having my hives stolen, having to move twice, surgery, having a baby, I'm getting two nucs today or tomorrow!!!! Can't wait.
Miss the quiet time spent with my little boy watching the bees come and go. He is fascinated with them as well.
Can't wait to taste to sweet success too. Lol

Second year beek here and after numerous losses to obsconding and hurricane started out this year with a few strong hives. Going to remove two hives this morning and that will give me 17 hives total! I have also built up five other hives for a buddy of mine and keep those too for his little farm making a total of 21. :-D What started out as a couple hive supply my own honey venture has gotten out of hand.  8-) Go figure  My 5 year old grandson has requested his own bee suit to become a beek and will have to comply due to his need to keep him occupied. Got to love it!

Stolen?  :jawdrop:  Wow, I had heard of that happening in commercial yards. Were they taken from an outyard?

How old is your little guy? Our three year old grandson likes to watch our bees. Hubby was pulling him around the yard on his bike and he actually jumped off and ran over to the hives. I forsee a kid-size beesuit in our future....

Right! Never knew people stole bees. They were in the backyard of a house that I owned and moved out of.
They got my first hive I ever had. Great bees too. They got a hand painted hive my son and I painted. 4 all together. Errrr.
The new baby is 5 weeks now. My older one is 7. He loves the bees.
We used to sit and watch the hives in the afternoon together. He is getting a suite ASAP.

Stolen huh?  Thats pretty ballsy!!  make me wanta set  up a dummy hive with a cheap phone and do some GPS tracking on it. No too mention a hidden camera to provide more evidence. Since Bees are considered livestock....is stealing them considered a "hanging offense" ???? :police:

Your not kidding about that.  Scott gave me a few pointers while I was down there about how to make a proper graphing tool.  Scott took me down to meet Lucy Ann.  Have you had any dealings with her yet?  That was an interesting experience 3 60 frame dadant radial extractors.  Good luck with your bees though I've wrapped my gums around some honey Scott produced and with his bees and that area your sure to make some fine honey.

Got ya. Thought you were local for some reason. I looked on the profile after I asked.
How is it there for you bees?

I had a 20 year gap between when I kept bees the first time and started back up in 2010.  I couldn't believe the changes, mostly due to varroa.  But the internet was I think the biggest change.  Having access to so much information and so many great beekps literally all around the world (that includes you Finski :-D)  makes keeping bees so much more fun and interesting.  Love sharing the joy with like minded folks.

As said earlier, once a beekeeper, always a beekeeper.

Doing pretty decent we had a almost non existent spring which really pushed things back.  Didn't lose any hives last winter though so must be doing something right.  Right now clover is starting to dry up some and looking to get a big crop of goldenrod to go into winter with since it rained like crazy this June.

Yeah. I think it's probably like riding a bike. You never forget.
Or maybe better described as an addiction. You forget about it for a while, and then, bam. Hooked again. Lol

Glad to hear no loses, stolen or otherwise. Lol.  First time I smelled goldenrod honey, I though something was wrong. Scott said its supposed to smell that way! It smells like dirty gym socks. Lol. Weird.

First inspection today! Can't wait.
