Bears
« on: May 23, 2011, 04:12:02 pm »
How do you deal with bears?  We've had a portable electric netting fence around our bee yard to no avail.  Recently we put up an outer single wire strand baited with bacon bait but the bear went through that as well.  This is in lowbush blueberry.
Thanks,
Kaisa

Build a goat fence, that is build a fence that a goat won't climb out of.  Then place 3 strands of electrified barbedwire at 1 ft above ground level, 6 inches above the top of the goat fence, and 1 in between.
My fence is made of 8 ft posts secured 2 ft into the ground with rails spaced at ground level, 30 inches, and 60 inches above the bottom rail.  2X4 welded wire is secured to the post and rails.  If bears are a problem add the barbed wire as indicated.
Any bear attempting to climb over the fence will expose themselves to getting shocked at up to 3 areas of the body at one time, and most probably to the belly.  It is the electric shock to the belly that is the most effective in deterring bears.

I seen an article in bee culture and they used 6 ft chain link fence with same fence fastened over top of it too. They used a [ipe gate hung over head for the gate.
Just a beek trying to get ready for winter.

A .30-06 also works well if you can catch them in the act.

No idea on the sign.   But in other pics you can see the paws that were burnt where the bear was grounded.
