Wood Glue for Frames in Australia
« on: November 27, 2014, 06:43:32 am »
Hi Just want to see what everyone one here uses for glue to make up frames.

Will the white wood PVA glue suffice? Can you use something like Sellys Liquid Nails ( the brown construction adhesive ) Liquid nails stinks a bit and you would need to let it air for a few days, but would it be safe?

I see a lot of people in the USA use Titebond is there an equivalent product here in Aus

We can now get titebond in Australia from Masters. It's very affordable.

I have been using titebond as well but prior to that was using Sellys Aquadhere external PVA with no problems. Personally I think liquid nails would be more hassle than it's worth, that stuff gets everywhere  :-D
I think how you nail the frames together is more important than what glue you use, adding a nail or staple through the side bar in to the top bar on each end makes all the difference as far as frame strength.

Titebond III is suppose to be waterproof. I use it and have no problems with it.

I don't glue my frames and they seem to be OK. Maybe a bit delicate in the firat year but after that they are fine.

However, if I was going to glue them I would use either of the glues mentioned above.

I'm the opposite, I actually only glue them with Titebond III...don't bother nailing them.

I haven't made up many frames. I've used cheap PVA wood glue in all the frames I have made, though, and for putting starter strips in them, and for all the joins in boxes and nucs I have made.

I'm gathering from this thread that Titebond or external PVA is probably worth the extra expense.
