New beek
« on: May 18, 2013, 12:37:00 am »
Just picked my first hive this evening. One full deep packed with bees. Drove it home. Took about 2 hrs. (Traffic) opened the entrance and they started bearding on the front of the hive. I had the ac on the whole way. Wondering if they were hot. A few bees were fanning but not many. It was dark out except for the headlights. Hoping they just wanted to stretch their legs.

Anyhow, I really appreciate all the advice given in these forums. Thanks much, and wish me luck.

Good luck to you and your bees....I think they're fine, probably just a little angry from the ride.  :)

Whenever the bees are trapped inside a box, it’s been my experience they always want to pile out whenever the entrance is opened again.  After they're satisfied their home/exit is safe again, they go back inside (unless it really is too hot).  I suspect they are more concerned about being trapped than overheating, but I don’t know for sure.

Welcome to the forum, Psparr.  I also started with some established hives.  Keep a check on them.  Good luck to you and your bees.
