Magazine Choice
« on: October 03, 2008, 10:14:21 am »
Granny Good Cook, wants to get me a subscription too a Bee keeping magazine.
In your opinion which of the two, American Bee Journal or Bee Culture, tends to focus articles more on a 10 hive or less beekeeper.  :?

Thanks

I don't think you can look at either of those that way.  American Bee Journal is more scientific from what I have been told (I never looked at it).  I get Bee Culture.  It's a fantastic pub and I think you will enjoy it.  BC seems to lean more towards the smaller operations but I think there is valuable information for the bigger ones too.  I see Mr. Bush's name and website referenced often in BC.

Bee Journal. I have grown to dislike BC, but I still get both anyways. You will outgrow BC quickly.

I hae only been getting BC for a few months.  It has had articles of interest to me.  Though buying both sounds like a good way to figure out which one suits the reader's interest best.  Let Granny buy one and you get the other. :)

I take ABJ, haven't read BC but am sure both are valuable in specific areas.

I bet if you call them, they will set you up with a trial issue.  That would be a good way if they can set you up with something like that.

Ditto.  There can be a redundancy of topics between the 2 publications but they usually have a slightly different view which I think is a good idead.  I kept bees for over 40 years before I subscribed to either Bee Magazine, but having done so now, I'd recommend both for at least a year and then decide what you prefer.

Over time the philosophy of BC has changed more to not treating bees.  I like that.

I noticed this. But weren't they then contributing to excessive use of chems just a few yrs ago w/ their advice? I have read Flttums articles from a few yrs ago and he has flip flopped entirely.

I get BC and I love it.  I have not read ABJ so I can't compare.  I can only speak for 1.

I have gotten some good tips for various problems I have encountered and I have had success with their recommendations.

Hope that was helpful.

I receive Bee Culture, my latest issue has illustrations on the cover, love when they do this, cartoon style, love the pic of the keeper with the giant mite stuck to his face like the alien creature.

Great articles and love the last page, always a good lil story there, good article on fall feeding on pg 51 by Jennifer Berry in this latest issue as well.

I get both of them. If I was to pick between the 2 it would be Bee Culture. There are good articles in both and different ways at looking at things.

My wife liked the giant mite too.  I found the watermelons hilarious.  It is a fantastic cover and I think it portrays the intended message perfectly.

I liked the giant mite chasing the dog!  Freakin hilarious!

I enjoy Bee Culture but it seems kinda cheaply made to me.  The cover is always fine but the pages inside are printed with organic soy based ink, which is cool but looks like it was done with a $50 ink jet printer from walmart.

The articles are sometimes really captivating but alot seem to be kinda corny.

I don't get ABJ yet but hope to give it a try once BC runs out.
