Checking second hive body
« on: May 13, 2009, 09:35:22 pm »
Apparentely I don't know what to search for because I can't seem to find the answer.

I just added the second hive body last week and I am getting ready to check the hives.  When I go to inspect the frames where do I put the second hive body when I check the first?  Do I take a sheet and set it on that?  Or do I just set it on the ground?

Does that make sense?  I seriously can't seem to find the answer to that anywhere!?

Thanks!!

I set mine on the top, since it is already on the ground.

Flip your cover over and place it on the ground, then set the top deep on it at an angle, then work the lower deep.  8-)

Cover on the ground or a couple of cement blocks nearby.

If I have a lot to do I'll set up a couple saw horses and a piece of plywood as a table top.  I'd rather keep them at waist level than bend to the ground.  And never set boxes directly on the ground.  The propolis is very sticky especially in summer temps and will pick up leaves and grass and dirt.

I like to stand mine up on the end to keep so many bees from crawling off of the combs.

I keep an extra empty box in the bee yard and it often comes in handy. You can set the boxes on it at an angle as they are removed and some also use it for a seat.

Another reason you don't want to place anything directly on the ground is that you don't want to chance losing the queen.  If you use the cover as suggested by many, any bees that fall off the box can be gently scooped back into the box when you are done with your check.
We love the girls...
