Weird frame/hive design.
« on: March 24, 2011, 06:54:59 pm »
Does anybody know the address to a web page where some European beekeeper has a frame and hive design that is either hexagonal or octagonal in shape?  I remember seeing it several years ago but I can't seem to locate the web page.

Edward,

That was not quite what I was looking for nor was that my taste for a beekeeping hive but it was interesting.  The hive information I am looking for is a hive that sits horizontal (as a african log hive) but it is either hexagonal or octagonal, has frames that are also hex. or oct. and they fit into the same shape hive and access to the interior of the hive is by opening a couple of the top-sides.   So I guess the shape of the hive is a hexagon  :-D Duhhhhh!

I remember seeing it on the web and the information was translated into English.

Tommyt,

Didn't find the hive I was looking for but that web page on the hive museum (outdoorplace.org) is really interesting and I think everyone should have a chance to check that out.

BTW-That first link doesn't connect.

I was poking around the internet and found a web page with ROUND frames.  This might be interesting for people who are experimenting with decreasing mite populations.  Or so they claim...apparently changing the angle of a brood frame affects the life cycle of the varroa mite.

Finski,

What do you mean by "cold way or warm way" ?

Beekeepers believe that direction of combs towards entrance means something to hive heat.

It is "hot issue" like how to make 1:1 syrup

No dice guys.  I've been there before and they are interesting designs but not what I was looking for.  The hive I saw was horizontal as opposed to vertical.  The warre hives are vertical and they have foundation-less frames.  The frames on the hive I saw had each individual frame in the shape of a hexagon so that you could remove each hole frame, extracted it and replace it in the hive.  The wood work was somewhat intricate.  When I first saw the hive on the web page I thought it was one of those small accordions that they played in the cowboy era.
