Often when I read what ever forum I think what a mesh!  Focus on everything even if issue has no meaning for bees either for beekeeper.  It is like to twist teeth of stamps.

It depends on philosofhy like Michael says. Yes it is. There are  many philosophies:

* killing time
* loving nature
* do only natural way
* get honey
* earn some money
* have interest hobby
* have job
* no idea, just have hives on yard

To mix all this good in one basket leads beginners into big mess.

In our country 30% from beekeepers have finished beekeeping. It happened after varroa arrived. Another reason seems to be that professional beekeeprs sell more and more honey and we buy food from big malls.  Small beekeepers have difficulties to sell their yield. To many beekeeping is not nice hobby, it turns towards pain.

Few talks about pastures. Yes, hives are on backyard - what pastures?
But honey comes from pastures, from flowers.  It is same what you do with frames and combs.


Beekeeping on beginners level seems to be more mess than some procedure. It is more and more "equipment sports" without goal. - Sorry!

hehehe- I had acres of clover planted 7 months before I got my first bee's, its about honey for me, I would like to start raising queens for more hives and maybe one day sale a few, but I spent half my beekeeping time on a tractor get pastures ready. already have clover planted, and after the clover bloom, going to plant buchwheat, have filled my yard up with fruit trees and have put in 3 large flower beds for beebalm and other bee attracting plants. I really do love this beekeeping thing.

For me Beekeeping is just a great deal of fun to observe the social behavior of an entire insect "society".  So much for the idea of "lower" animals.
