You might live in a small town if.....
« on: October 23, 2008, 12:27:19 am »
I spent most of this last week going to, staying at, and coming back from my brother's place.

Here are a few of the observations or things I saw during my trip.

You might live in a small town if....

The main street is less than 6 blocks long and the side streets are dead ends.

They list the elevation instead of the Population.
OR
If the Elevation is a 2 digit number instead of 3.
OR
If the Elevation is a single digit number (Milltown, WA, Elev 4, Pop 2).

If the Police car is a 4X4 with a red light on the roll bar.

The Fire Department is still using the 1946 Diamond Reo it got surplus after the Korean War.

The Town's Street department equipment consists of a single Ford 8N tractor with hydrolic bucket.

The main street is improved gravel and the side streets are rutted mud.

The City Hall, Church, General Merchantile, and Tavern all share the same building.
OR
The Feed Store, Hardware Store, the Barbershop, and the Burger joint all use the same cash register.

The hitching rack only has room for 1 horse.

The city limits signs are on opposite sides of the same post.

The town you were looking for was the house you just passed at 55 mph (Milltown, WA).

The houses in town still standing outhouses.

I travel Hwy 2 over Stevens Pass.  At Waterville (elevation 2856) there is a a 6 mile long portion of the hwy that drops down the the Columbia River at Oronda (Elevation 1502) that follows the side of an arrayo, 7-8% grade, and twists and turns than a snake.  There is a signat the top that all big rigs must test there breaks before they start the decent. There's an short extra lane coated with black tire marks.

VICK, TEXAS. Vick is at the junction of Farm Road 381 and U.S. Highway 87, four miles south of Eola in west central Concho County. In 1963 the community had a post office, a motel, and two other businesses. A 1984 map showed a cluster of buildings at the site. In 2000 the population was twenty.

Brian, well, I dunno, if that describes the town that your Brother lives in, I wanna live there too.  I need that small town town.  I grew up in a small town (which these days is not a metropolitan!!!!).  I yearn for those small town days.  That small town will be a place where I live one day, I am getting so tired of the rat race of where I live, it has changed so much in the past 20 years, I need to get to that dead end road, where it takes me eons to get to the big supermarkets.....have that most wonderful and awesome day, love life.  Cindi

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brewster_County,_Texas

Brewster County, Texas. The largest county and smallest population.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,193 square miles (16,039 km²), none of which is covered in water.

The county's area is larger than the area of Connecticut, Delaware, and Rhode Island individually, and larger than the combined area of Delaware and Rhode Island.

area - 6,193 square miles
Population - (2000) 8,866
Density -   3/sq mi (1/km²)

I do not know how they got the density figure. When I figure it it come to 1.4 per Sq. Mile
I have twenty acres down there.

JP, oh yea, we shoulda known it was comin'!!!  I love that song too.

Ted, OK, I think that is the town that I'm gonna move to, that fine day,  :-D ;) :) :) :)  I love small town, need small town, want small town.  Truly, I see me and my Husband one day, living in the central part of our province, on a dead end road, only a couple of houses, on an acre or two only, no one else living on our property, besides us.  My Husband said that he even wanted a moat that all our family would have to cross, if the didn't get them with salt rock first from his rifle.  Eeks!!!  Kidding.  We will be moving one day to a small town, I know that, just when.....have the most wonderful and awesomest days, Cindi

I left out the towns I went through that don't exist anymore, technically.  Some didn't even have any buildings still standing.
Something Millville, POP 0, although it did have a grain silo at one end of town.  Or a mile of reduced speed (35 mph) with a deserted "convience" store midway through, no town name showing but it had a Flying A sign above the glass topped gas pump.

Pssh you city folk. This is my town of 527, I am pretty sure everyone in town's house is in this picture. My house is there. We don't have police...we did have a constable once, but he caught the next town over's fire chief's teenage daughter parking with her boyfriend. He gave them a hard time, so we voted to take his little blue light away. Needless to say, he quit.

Now that's the kind of town I  was talking about, some bigger, many smaller.
