Title: Hey from South Georgia
Post by: Gagirl on March 02, 2008, 09:18:49 pm
:-D I am soooo happy to have found this forum! I have been fascinated by bees ever since I can remember and have always wanted to have a few hives. I also LOVE honey and buy it everytime I find a small beekeeper. I dont have any hives right now and I am looking to take some time here to read and learn all I can.

Hey Georgia girl, really glad to see you here! We are passionate about bees and we are glad to help those that want to travel down that beekeeping road. You will learn about beekeeping here and other things and make new friends along the way. Hope you come back to ventrillo also. We saw you in there for just a second last night, we had some regulars in there and we were just shooting the breeze and waxing about nothing in particular but please feel free to stop in any time and chat, we are certainly a harmless bunch and just love talking beetalk or any kinda talk for that matter. You certainly wouldn't be the only gal in the room that's for sure. Ann, (Reinbeau), and Annette, are regulars in there. Ann speaks and Annette does the text chat. If you don't want to talk you can listen in and text us back, or you can just listen in, there's no pressure. Anyway, welcome to beekeping.

Sincerely, JP

Welcome!
This is a great place to learn about bees.  I love the 'search' function since I find that many times a question I have has already been discussed, and I can get instant answers.

I'd like to encourage you to get involved with a local bee club. Much of the beekeeping craft is "local", and it sure helps having a mentor. Plus, it's great fun to hang out with other beeks.

I would love if someone could point me in the direction of a good starter hive. I would like to get one soon to learn the parts and be able to put my hands on it while reading and learning. I dont intend to get bees until next season, but I would love to have a box to get familiar with. I have access to.. well upwards of 100 acres....that I can put hives on. My husband is also interested, thank God, so I wont get in trouble for spending money on this!

http://www.geocities.com/fatbeeman/ Gagirl please check out Don, aka Fatbeeman's site. Btw, he is in ventrillo most Saturday nights and a lot on Wed nights. His bees are known for being very docile, he uses small cell and he is chemical free. What more could you want?

Oh Georgia gal those catahoulas can be down right subborn!!! No clues there, plus they scare me. My Dad's neighbor had one yrs ago on the other side of the fence. I tried everything to make friends with that dog, didn't work!!! I fed that dog and it was nice until I ran outta food and it would then look into my eyes and growl and give me goosebumps! I know that dog wanted to tear me appart. I even did a little research on catahoulas in my journey to make friends and found out they don't like strangers, duh! well I didn't think I was after all the feedings, but boy that dog knew how to play me!!!

As far a training the dog not to eat bees, trust me when I say that the bees will train your dog. It may take a bunch of stings for them to prove their point but the bees will make it at some point. Good luck with that one!

  Hey Gagirl,
  Jp's right on the money!
I was just fixing to tell you that once your dog meets the bees face to face they'll bee friends. The bees will show him whos in charge of the hive.
I have a picture of my Rotty, Tank, after he decided to see whats behind the smell of honey...Poor little guy.....You can see him if you got to the forum search and type "Sting Face" i believe...You can see some of us too who have learned who's in charge of the hive!
I feel sorry for you sort of...I almost went CRAZY waiting for my bees to come last spring!
Maybe someone will come along and you wont have to wait till next spring!
 Anyways, welcome!
your friend,
john

Gagirl, what part of south Georgia are you located? Rossmans is located in Moultrie, Ga. They are a fun place to visit and they are very helpful. They have a huge observation hive in their showroom.
