Yep, I am a dahlia grower/fanatic...have a small 1/4 acre flower farm...just got home from seeing the new introductions for 2009!!! Drooooling...hhhmmmmmmm :lol:

I wanted to express the beauty of your images, all of them. I have a technical question (beside youre camera specs.) do you zoom in and take the image from about 1ft to 1.5 ft away on closeup items (roots, etc.) because your depth of field is so enormous, I can take great closeups with my Olympus Macro Lens, but in doing so anything too close loses sharpness in depth.
I regain depth using the zoom feature (optical only, never a digital zoom user) and regain depth, but YOURS seems superb, not to mention you always have those wonderful yellow tones that you cannot get here in the East because the SUN is always going away from us during the day, we get more bluish tones, then the yellow, reds and oranges.
Just letting you know I'm jealous, your photos and blog are wonderful DVD!

Thanks for your kind words about the blog! I have just a simple Canon PowerShot SD750
I found the "digital macro" button on the menu bar and shot from about 1 foot away. I was impressed with the photos! Really I do not know what I am doing, ha ha ...
Hopefully I can get some good shots of the bees, but I hate getting propolis on the camera!

I've never planted them and I'm guessing they are not a flower for the bees? But they are nice.

There are many varieties of dahlias. Some are open centered which the bees are crazy about. I sell the cut flowers, and tubers. I also enter the exhibition dahlias in shows.

Very Nice picture. Looks like something close to a "pooh" dahlia.
Myself, most dahlias look like overgrown mums and I do not like the orange varieties.
But I love the "Edge of Joy" which is white edged in violet, and always thought that they would neat to plant with "Mary Eveline", which I'm sure you know has Burgundy petals.
Of course, at this point I'm talking out my rear-end as I have no clue about anything with dahlias. I've searched my extensive spring collection of every plant company magazine, and have just noticed the two above varieties from the van Bourgondien catalog. Seems they have about the largest variety of dahlias for sale. Of course they want 8.00 a bulb. :shock:
Let me know if we could work out a deal for a few bulbs. I would be interested in the two I mentioned above, found here... http://www.dutchbulbs.com/store/dahlias Bottom row, center two.

There are many varieties of dahlias that are field dahlias and not exhibition dahlias. I grow dahlias listed in the American Dahlia Society classification list. Yes I am a "dahlia snob" hahaha.

I am not sure yet if I will have surplus dahlia tubers available, but will let you know ASAP when I do.

I do not know really. Sharon just mailed me out a bunch of seeds. They did not have names. They were all bee loving flowers though even though the flowers were all different.

I always read or assumed that dahlia's were tuber plants that needed to be removed in winter. But your saying that these are from seeds. Are they first year plants, being this is the plants and flowers you got in one season from seeds?

I don't know much about dahlia's,but they are from seeds and this was the first year I grew them. I read from Sharon that I do have to remove the tubers from the ground in the winter. (my friend was supposed to remove them, but never did, so I believe they may be dead, or perhaps they will just come back up again in the Spring)

Nice photos Annette. Your seedlings produced plants, that in turn produced tubers. They may have survived, and might well re-grow for you this season!
As you know, when grown from seed, we never know what the flower will look like, as the bees do the pollinating. When you grow from a tuber, you get a duplicate of that particular bloom!
