Title: Fall Splits
Post by: alfred on August 26, 2013, 11:17:00 am
This year I had great success in doing late spring splits. Several of them have done so well that I will be harvesting honey from them. I am wondering what folks think of FALL SPLITS.

I am thinking of doing some but I have no idea as to timing and what to expect. I am in Northern Colorado with about a month and a half from our usual first snow. Some of my hives are very strong right now and it seems that they might do well with splitting.

Any thoughts or input is appreciated.

Thanks,
Alfred

It's getting pretty late for your location for splits even if you supply a laying queen.  The first hard freeze is hard to predict and everything comes to a screeching halt when it happens...

I can pretty much do splits all year except for maybe two months in south Louisiana, but I think it would be hard in your area.

I think you are to late in the season. We don't split anything after July.

And what would you consider enough time before a frost. Even though I have little forage before frost.
