I keep just a few hives and I never like to jeopardize what little hives I have. If I have a really strong hive that is doing so well, I just don't like to introduce a problematic hive into it. I like the shaking of the bees. That is what I probably would have done.

At the end of the day, I think that's what really drove my decision to do the shakeout. I really wanted to minimize the chance of harming Alpha...After all, "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"...Right?  :-D

I figure those beekeepers with many, many hives can take more chances than I can with my little apiary.
