Title: Good Afternoon!
Post by: ldygardener on June 08, 2010, 06:10:41 pm
Hi!  My name is Angie and I'm in the research phase of becoming a beekeeper!  I've always been fascinated by bees when I've seen them at the fair.  Being that I'm an avid gardener and I love to watch all the pollinators in on my flowers it seems like a natural fit.  I live in a rural area, have five acres of land and we installed a 2000 gallon pond with waterfall just last summer so I have a lot of the elements already in place for the 'girls' to come and live.

Now the reason this has all come to a new and heightened desire for me is because I got to have a first hand experience with a 'nest' of honeybees and the beekeepers that came to rescue them.  The girls had made a home in a tree that I had to have removed, had I known they were in the tree I would have just had the tree topped and left the 80' stump for them! Luckily the tree guys used a crane and gently placed each section of the tree on the ground, they were so gentle in fact that I was able to stand inches away from the hole in the tree peering in to see what was in there.  Wow was I surprised when I saw the girls!  Even more impressed by how incredibly calm they were after what had just happened to their home.  Watching the recovery process and getting to see it all first hand has made me even more interested.

So I got a couple of books and am reading up, I joined my local beekeepers group and now I've ventured onto the www for all the information that my nogging will hold!

Have a great day!
Angie

Welcome to the forum. There is a lot of good info here and the members are eager to help. They can also do harm if they don't know where you are. Beekeeping is very localized and what works in one area does not work in another. Please put your location in your profile so we can give you correct info for where you live.

Hi Angie,
I'm from Maryland too, and rejoined yesterday (could not remember my old info from about three or four years ago.)

I'm always fascinated watching the bees pollinate our garden too. They are so industrious, quite inspiring watching them go about their daily activities. :)
When I was a child I used to try to follow them back to their hive, (I just wanted to see their home) that never worked since they moved so fast, lol.

Oh that must have been fascinating seeing an active swarm. I've never seen that before, perhaps someday I will. :) Like yourself I have a few books and am simply looking to learn as much as I can before finally purchasing my babies. :) I'm definitely looking forward to being a first time beekeeper.

It was so cool!  I've always loved watching them on my flowers and I thought before about giving it a try but after the experience with them last week, I'm hooked.  I posted pictures on my blog, I think that the link to it is on my profile here.  If not you can send me an email or message and I'll give you the link.  I'm reading lots and I am adding plants to my gardens for the benefit of the bees, I've always had plants for pollinators but now I'm getting specific to them!

I can just imagine what that was like. I saw the pictures on your blog, simply amazing. Your place is lovely. I've always loved log cabins!

I have a blog, but besides the random bee posts I'll be boring (I hope educating, as I learn more too) my little community with (chuckles) about bees, I won't get into full swing with that until next year. :)

Looking at your pictures did make me feel guilty, I do need to post more gardening pictures on my own blog, lol. I love your fish pond; I'm planning on adding one next year.
