OK, I've been "bad"
« on: May 18, 2009, 10:00:34 pm »
My son & I were checking one of the hives this afternoon and I accidentally (or subconciously) pulled too hard on one of the frames and a piece of comb fell off...... I have NO self-discipline! We ate it on the spot. De-licious!!
It is what it is.......except when it isn't.

it is especially good for you when it contains larva.
Someone really ought to tell them that the world of Ayn Rand?s novel was not meant to be aspirational.

I never cared much for eating the comb with the honey... especially if it's brood comb.   :-P

Not that I'm opposed to eating larvae (we ate worse in survival school & in the field), but this was honey comb from the outer edge of the brood comb. Nothin' but sweet stuff, folks. I brought a small piece with me this morning and put it under the lab illuminator -- if there's anything in there, I don't see it. I guess I'll have to check online today & see what's supposed to be in there!

Any open space will be used to make comb.

Bee space is 1/4 to 3/8 inch....any more and you will see burr comb.....and lots. Companies make their boxes a little different in size...messure from the top edge of your box to the top of your frame... then messure from the bottom edge of your box to the bottom of your frame. Now, add those dimensions together...that is the space you have when you put a another box on your hive. If that space is larger..buy a hand plane and shave this down....it's best to do this now or you can have a big mess for years. Have fun.....
