New Member from Central PA
« on: March 03, 2010, 10:09:30 pm »
Hello all,
New member and new to beekeeping. My hive arrives 3/18 and my first Nuc in mid May. I have been devouring books on the subject as well as internet sites trying to glean as much info as possible before the big day.
I am not a total novice, I used to accompany a bosses father while he tended his hives, and helped him get a load of bees from a library wall. Still, I feel like the more I know now and get refreshed with, the more apt I am to be successful.
Another member directed me here who shares another common interest. I am looking forward to learning and maybe someday be able to assist someone else getting started.
We are in PA now, but will be moving to our land in NH in 4 years and the plan is to be as self sufficient as possible, and bees figure into that equation. I am originally from NH. I also garden extensively and wild forage way more than most people would think healthy  :-D ( Morels, berries, Chanterelles, Black Trumpets, Grifola ).
I just ordered some locust lumber from the Amish out in the valley to use as hive stands, I should have that by the weekend.
Looking forward to doing some reading and learning.

Livefreeordie.  Welcome to our forum, glad you found us.  You are up to some wonderful things with nature, that is clear to see.   Good thing to do.  Stick around, we love new members, we love to listen, to help and just be friends.  Have that wonderful and most great day with the same health. Welcome,

I am only 100 miles from you depending on where you live.  Where are you getting your Nucs from?  Just curious I am getting mine from Bjorn out of Dillsburg.  Have you joined the Chambersburg club yet?  Anyway good luck this year.  Its my first and very excited.  Be typing to you.

Thank you CV Bees, I am getting my Nuc from Half-Acre Farm in State College ( only 30 miles away ) and since he has equipment, and I am sure there are going to be times I will be in a hurry for wood, I will use his stuff for that as well. Picking up everything I will need for the first couple months ( hopefully ) on the 18th, Nuc won't be ready till May.
I have written to the local club here, which covers Huntingdon and Mifflin counties, but haven't heard anything yet. Would really like to find some local folks for some mentoring just in case, and it would be fun to get together with some other beekeepers.
