Cool moment for my better half. Queen Flights.
« on: May 14, 2009, 07:56:44 am »
Becky was out Bee watching two nuc's I made up, which hatched  queens. I took that queen out, put her in a mating hive in hopes of the other queen cell hatching. Well, another cell hatched yesterday. So at this point we had two boxes with a queen in each. As she was watching the traffic, worried about robbing she saw 1 queen exit the hive and launch for what appeared to be her mating flight.
Now the other queen in the nuc next to her comes in for a landing...2 Queens in one day..WOOOHOOO !

Now..I still have another undamaged queen cell left...Suggestions.

I am confused. Which queens were out on mating flights?
If they hatched that day then they can't be mating or even leaving the hive.

Not sure what exact day they hatched. Why would they not fly that day? How long would a newborn queen wait in a queenless hive?

I am sure they both hatched very recently.  I just did the split and am reasonablely sure the queen from the parent hive did'nt fly onto the frame as I took it out. Both splits had unopened cells less than 4 days ago.

Way to go, Becky!!  That had to be an awsome experience.  I would hold onto the extra queen in case either of your new queens are duds.
