Bear got hive on shed roof

We have always had bear issues in Vermont where we keep a few hives. Our neighbor placed his hives on a shed roof to protect them, it worked last year, but last week the bear figured out how to climb the shed.

So far the bear hasn't touched our hives which are only about 200 yards from the shed. we have primer electrified netting around ours.

You need to get a dog, my friend.  I mean a D-A-W-G! Not a yappy heel-biter, but a serious dog.  I have 2 golden retrievers.  In my area we have not only black bears, skunks, and racoons, but bee theives that come at night and remove all the brood frames and leave you with an empty box.  My dogs do a flawless job of fending off all of the above.  I have never had a problem.  Oh, by the way, I hear bear jerky is very tasty!   :evil:

I can see all the scratches on that shed. Looked like the bear really wanted to get up there. Yiks!!

I saw a film once where a bear went up a tree and came across a wire (sort of hanging hand over hand) to drop into a bee yard.  :jawdrop:  In the yard it ate most of the brood but little honey.   -Mike

dam smart bears in vermont using ladders and such.... good thing to because he will stop scratching the walls..... :roll:

Buckshot in his rear end will stop him from scratching up them walls.   :-D

Spent several weekends during bear season trying to give him lead poisoning, no luck... he never showed his face.
picked him up on the trail cam a few times though.

How did he get the hives on the roof of the shed? I need two people to lift my 2 deep hives.

Unbelievable! I wonder if I need to re-electrify the fence around my hives, if the bears are coming out of hibernation in this warm weather...

LOL  I have a Newfoundland that is scared of his own shadow.  That includes coons and possums.

I trust electric fence to do the job with bears and vermin I think over any dog.  Stupid dogs cause expensive vet bills too.  One electric fence costs less that getting a dog all stitched up.

Just remember if you use a solar charger to check it's output after dark. A battery that goes dead 4 or 5 hours after sunset renders the fence useless until the sun comes back up. At which time you may not need it.I know some who have checked their voltage in the bright of day and have a false sense of security and wonder why the animals go right through the electrified fence.
