Yard "RENT"
« on: August 10, 2007, 09:06:38 am »
A friend has kindly allowed us to use a small section of his 6 acre farm for our bees. The hives there were new and did not produce any excess honey although we did get about 100 lbs from our back yard.  We would like to repay his kindness with some honey. What is an appropriate amount as rent?

Thanks, Ray

3 pounds was recommended to me by a commercial apiary when I asked them the same question.  It is what they give for "rent" also.

2 Lbs of honey per year for each honey producing colony as yard rent.

My dad let a beekeeper keep hives he kept about 25 hives on his farm and gave him a gallon of honey each fall.

give as much as bees give you...don't feel obligated to give him every year, although..if the year was good to you, you should be to him. also, never forget to tell him how his apples and other veggies look much better now that he has bees :-D

I always base it on that year's harvest.  In a good year I give them more than in a bad year.  If I don't get any honey, I don't give them much.

Thanks. Based on this year's building up and no excess honey, it looks like a "mercy" payment is in order.

I gave a case of comb honey in pint jars for the 2 yards I had in the oranges.
