@ Michael Bush,

Yes, since bees are engineered to live off of honey during winter it makes sense to me that they should be eating honey during winter.  So I agree.

This year was troublesome in that not only did the girls not make honey for me but not enough for themselves.  So we're entering winter without sufficient reserves.  Oh joy!  I was able to top off one hive, with syrup, but the other hive can't seem to get with the program. 

Question,  Is 2 deeps worth of honey enough to go in & through winter without direct feeding?

1 1/2 deeps worth of honey is enough for a large cluster to make it through the winter here where I live.  They need the other half of the deep to cluster in.  In Virginia, I'm guessing one full of honey and one for them to cluster in that is not full would be plenty.
