this past Friday night my wife and I went to the American Legion for happy hour. I drank beer and although i dont smoke when you leave this place you smell like you do. When I got home I went up to fill hive top feeders. The bees seemed much more interested in me standing behind the hives than usual. When I opened the second hive I got nailed twice on the hand and one on top of my head. All I can think is that the bees aren't into partying
-
Or maybe they were upset that they were'nt invited? :-D

I smoke and the bees have never responded to it , at least yet. Mine seem pretty easy going. Might be becasue yours never smelled you like that before. Guess you need to quit drinking. LOL
-
I dont think quitting drinking is the solution. I believe it is the CO2 in the beer that is bothering them. Try drinking a 6 pack of soda and see if you get the same effect. My understanding is the bees are sensative to the CO2 and the increased CO2 level of someone drinking beer (soda would be no different) just bothers them. No the Co2 doesn't leave as soon as you belch. I can take up to 1 full day to completely purge the excess CO2 from your body.

Beer smells like alarm pheromone to the bees. Banannas too. You only have to get within a few feet of the bees for them to take notice.
-
Sounds like they may abolitionists to me! Maybe instead of sugar water you might slip in a beer or two? Just kidding. :)
-
So there you go. If you really want to tick them off, drink a 6 pack and eat a few bananas. Then go sing to them a song with a lot of "H's" in it!

When was happy hour? was it after sundown/dark when you did this?
It is not good practice to tend bees after dark. Even just to slip the top off to feed them.
They know about varmits , and other things that go (bump) in the night. ;)doak

Okay lets not get carried away here and start trashing beer on the forum. there must be a logical explanation here to this whole incident ;) ;) ;)

Where did you get those bees? I bet they are from Utah!!! :roll:I bet they are mormon bees. Brian and I can handle those for you. Just let us know where to pick them up. Poor little girls being exposed to your devilish  ways, no wonder they were upset. :-D
Let me know if I can help out.

Hey Danno!
I think you should just make it a point to have a few more beers before you leave!...That way you wont care about how perturbed the bees are getting!
try it and tell us if it works better for you!

Bees really go for beer breath - in a bad way. They don't like beer, sweat, old spice deodourant, smelling shirts and wollen soxs. I wear clean white overalls at all times when working bees and have no problems. If I have a few beers I leave off looking at bees for 24 hours.
-
Old spice huh? I wear that deodorant and they like me better than when I don't shower! Wait a minute, that might be getting too personal. Maybe it is a girl thing, I mean bee thing! Still like the idea of more beer before you go though.

My .02, some people smell as have more of an odor than other people do, diet comes in to play as well as deodorants, colognes, etc... And to add to the pot, who's to say what colony will like your particular odor over another?
Maybe someone can get some federal funding and do a study. :-D

Maybe we can get Budweiser to sponser us in that study :-D
-
Coors would be the perfect sponsor for that study!!! :) :) :)

How about a GOOD beer, like Molson Canadian or any other beer NOT made in the U.S. :-D
-
guess if your bee are canucks then you might be on to something
-
OK, let me get this straight...
This post, so far, has:
1.) Angry bees
2.) Lots of beer
3.) A Pittsburg Penguins fan
4.) A Philadelphia Flyers fan
5.) The Coors girls
Other than the Coors girls, that combination sounds like trouble to me.

Yeah, they will be tough to beat if they make it past Dallas. I hope you just jinxed them though :-p

Budwieser Bees, has a ring to it! You guys give me an idea for someone you don't like..put a miners hat on em backwards, maybe strap a couple of tiny flashlighs onto their coveralls, have em eat banana pudding & drink a few before knocking on & opening a hive @ night to shout "Hi-Ho Happy Honeybees How'ya Hangin???"into the top (bees don't hear, right??)...hee hee  ~ Have a stopwatch to see how fast they can do the 100yd dash! Apparently I don't have enough to keep me occupied ;) ** sigh**. Jody

Love your humor. My brother-in-law smokes all the time and drinks some and he hates being around our hives, they get him every time. Although I have to give him kudos for getting three swarms the other day for us. He was fine as long has he had my husband's bee suit. My husband said he had to wash the suit after my brother-in-law wore it because the bees wouldn't leave him alone.

Maybe some Hooters Hot Wings? :)
