Reccommended nail size for frames
« on: February 15, 2010, 09:31:11 pm »
Made all the parts for 160 frames, top rail, sides and bottom rail. I don't have a power staple gun so am going to assemble the frames using a Bostich brad nailer.  I can go with 1" or 1 1/4" 18 gauge brads?  My concern is splitting or cracking the the frames and whether to use 1 or 2 brads when nailing?

- Go with the longer nails. Thats what I use.
- 3 or 4 brads going down through the top bar ( both sides )
- 3 brads going up through the bottom bar into the sides ( both sides )
- 1 or 2 brads going from the side bar into the top bar

I don't find the wood splits very often ( white pine ). I nail 15 frames at once in my jig. 15 frames with the foundation popped in takes me about 33 minutes.
Sounds like over kill on the nails, but the frames turn out rigid and the brads are cheap.
Sometimes I don't have to pull out any missed brads, but usually 2 or 3 missed their mark.
