The BS detectors went off with the line about 500lbs/226.7kg in the hive.

What kind of bees do this? Never works around here.

"Peters pulled at least 10 good chunks of honeycomb out of the roof and placed it inside a hive box in order to move the entire population.

"We'll leave it overnight. Hopefully the queen is in there," says Peters.

If she is, then the entire colony can continue in their new home.

If not, the queen will realize the eggs and honeycomb are gone and find the box. "

I have gotten to a point on cutouts where I setup a swarm trap about 10 feet away from the cutout. If after the cutout I can't seem to get the bees into the hive. And I didn't find the queen. Usually once you have removed all the comb they will abandon the space. Well I have had 3 hives work with me by moving into my swarm traps. I then can move them into the hive bodies.

These bees were pretty much all in the box with all of their brood comb. I suspect I didn't get the queen and they went back home.

From this.

Excellent photos.
I have had things like that happen a few times. On this last one the bees where in a roof soffit. I cut out all the comb moved the bees into a hive place the hive on the roof next to the old entrance. Bees ignored the hive and even with excluders on all flew back toward the old hive in the sophet. I went back and saw the bees had a small hole that they were crawling into that lead to inside the house. I cut open the ceiling in the house. Removed all that comb. Placed all that in the hive. I put a swarm trap up on the tree in the yard just in case. As I was cleaning up I noticed the bees were still going back to the old location. I looked in again. because the nest was a t a point where the sloped roof meet the flat roof there was one more section they had comb in. I had to cut another opening in the top part of the ceiling but below the slopped roof line. I removed all that comb and again moved the bees. This time the bees went back and to the old hive location. However after three days the bees all flew into the swarm trap completely ignoring the hive box with all their old comb.

I have learned that if you remove the comb, it is very likel the bees will abscond after a few days. I just give them a place to abscond to in case they don't like the hive. Or in case I didn't get the queen. So often there are small nooks and crannies that bees can hide in that I may never get the queen.

Brendhan
