No Capped Brood
« on: March 13, 2011, 08:53:20 am »
I have a small colony 8 of ten deep frames drawn out
Yesterday I opened them to do a inspection and
If I found the Queen. I was going to take her out and replace
with a Local bought one.
I have 2.5 frames with Brood what I see it white larva
I believe eggs and a somewhat pale orange cup but the
Pale orange mucus looking fills the comb about the same depth as
the larva.
I see drones on the comb but no large looking cups, where they
came from, the hive is as calm as calm could be.
I had it open for at least an hour looking at the 3 combs with
all I stated above.
Why are they not capping anything??
I did miss Killing one bee that had a mite on it
was a good, bad thing to observe but I never saw another bee
with mites

Thanks
Tommy

Tommy, when was the last time you inspected? It sounds like they may have swarmed on you and the new queen is just getting fired up. The orange cups are most likely bee bread (fermenting pollen) but If you're thinking it might be something else you can try the string test.

String Test ??
The hive is maybe 6 weeks
I started it with a comb of brood from a KTBH
and attached this hive to a Owl Box after a week I took
this Hive from the Owl Hive and they drew all this
I never really did a Full inspection
I took it from my house to the Bee Yard  20 min south
about a week ago
My plan was to re queen
now I have no Plans kind of a real wake up
OF I don't know whats going on at ALL

You have a 6 week trap out with all open brood? Sounds perfect to me. The new queen emerged in 2 weeks, started laying after 4 to 5 weeks. You should have capped brood within a few more days.

Man that makes me feel way better I am bummed about this thinking it all was going south
These bees are so good temperament wise
I'd hate to loose them,I've even decided,I will keep the Queen even though the inspector
said I should re queen all my trapped out and swarmed bees, which is all I have
I guess I'll start another post for this
The guy that has the land (handicapped old Beek) wanted me to requeen so he bought
3  queens
I've had them since Thursday
I took a frame of brood honey mix and one fully drawn empty comb put it in a 3 frame nuc
along with 1 bought queen
Hopefully give that queen a start
How long can I keep the other 2 queens/4 attendants in each in the wood/candy plug containment box?

Thanks
Tommyt

Iddee thanks again I went and checked my notes I do this for reference and to cut down on mistakes also helps in the CRS I have lol
here is a quote the KTBH is what I took brood comb from
but there is the date
Quote
Feb 16 10:30 am set Brood in Owl box hive KTBH don’t seem angry at all so maybe they still have a queen

That's only 25 days. You are lucky to have any larva at all this early.

Why would you requeen a trap hive? The queen is always from your hive where you got the eggs.

Your right and that too was a trap out hive ,But I just figured I would have a new marked queen for the inspector
what I did real wrong is time for what ever reason (memory) I was thinking the hive I'm talking about was older
than 25 days
Thank God I keep notes EH!
because I had it stuck to the owl box it gained a whole bunch of bees

can you tell me how long I can keep queens in the release cage ??

Tommy just so you know they are saying to requeen swarms and trap outs with new queens because they are trying to get ride of and prevent  the africanized queens from populating the southern areas so its pretty much protocol to requeen/     if they become very aggressive then id  requeen.  Chris

OK thanks
I guess I house them tomorrow or let them Fly
that will hurt
Do inspection and make some small hives I guess
I hate letting them go
I have a Huge exterior Tree hive maybe I can go take some bee's and Comb and
use them with the new queens
Your thoughts welcome ?

Once they have mated, queen breeders sometimes bank queens for a month or more. Only virgin queens become infertile within a short period of confinement.
