Title: Wanna see something really scarey?
Post by: Cindi on January 21, 2008, 09:19:39 am
As children, my youngest Brother and Sister grew up in a house that was on the beach.  They were water babies.  They lived their summers in the water.  I had all but grew up and was no longer living at home, I do not share this love of the ocean water with them.

Last summer my Sister took her 7 children in tow up to camp in a campsite that was close to the place where they grew up, alongside this beautiful beach, that has so many tales to tell of children, beautiful sun and life in the water.

She found, and might I add, something that terrified her and my Brother both, as they swam amongst the kelp and seaweeds of that ocean.  She showed her children  ;) :) :) (ooooh, how I love to scare the kids too, but that is generally hiding and jumping out at them as they walk by), and took the liberty of taking some great pictures of this leach from the deep.

This horrible looking creature would attach to the bathing suits, the skin of humans, anything that its little leg holders could attach to.  It still terrifies her to think of this leach.  That is what we will call it.  A sea leach.

She e-mailed pictures to our Brother, imploring him to find out what the name of this Sea Leach that horrified them as children.  He has spent many a time on the internet trying to get the "real" name of this little mucky thing that brought horror to the children of the sea.

Anyone know of this creature, even better still, what this creature may be called by human?  Have a beautiful and wonderful day, Cindi

looks like an isopod of some sort.  about 4000 different species ( water slaters, wood lice and some parasites ).  from it's coloration i would guess that particular one feeds on seaweed.

Does it bite?

I agree that it looks like a giant green pillbug roly-poly.

Not as big as this one...

I thought it may be a big Sea Louse, But the biggest ones of those I've seen are only about 2 inches long and a clearish white color,.

Mark, oh brother, now look what you have done.  Now I have to look through 4000 pictures (if I can find them) of the isopod to see what species it is.  This one did live on seaweed.  My Parents lived on a beach on the ocean, that where this nasty would stick onto my Siblings clothes and skin.  I don't think it bit them, but she said that they were really hard to get off, I think their feet had that kind of "stickiness" like what the bees and many other insects have.

Rick, that isopod that you posted a picture of looked like some kind of alien creature, now what purpose do these serve, are they like man eaters when they are that big, hideous, but boy do they spark my curiosity.  Have a wonderful, great day.  Cindi

Please give more info about the gigantic roly poly, would they make good pets?

Sincerely, JP

That is a Ceti Eel, the thing from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

MrILoveTheAnts.  Now I for surely believe that you are one worped dude (not the spelling of warped).  For a minute I thought that you were serious.  I am very guillable about certain things.  So....I am a treky fan myself, and I remember the episodes with this hideous creature coming out of one the star crew ears or something like that.  That episode horrified me and still the thought of it this day still does.

So I googled the Ceti Eel and there were so many sites that were available about the creatures of the Star Trek series.  So informative and interesting.

Nope.....I don't think it was the Ceti Eel, definitely some kind of algae eating isopod (I googled that too and got far way worse than lost in there).  Well, one day, some place, some time, someone will know the exact name for this creature of the ocean seaweeds and kelps.  Have a great and awesome day.  Cindi

I'm glad someone got the joke there. Yah that's definitely a creepy little bug, but beyond my study of insects. When I was young I saw a similar bug come out of the sink drain at my school's classroom but it had far more legs then that, and yes it was at least two inches long. Very disgusting.
