Who will be bowhunting soon?
« on: September 20, 2007, 11:22:01 pm »
Anyone getting ready for bow season? Its just around the corner. Planted three food plots last weekend, oceola clover, buckforage oats, and winter wheat. A friend told me clover is 35% protein, never realized that. I don't have a lot of property and we love seeing the deer. If I get the opportunity I will only take a mature doe or two and a mature buck. Have a couple of bucks that are 3 and a half yrs old, one I believe will be 4 and a half this yr. Good luck!

I bought a bow this year, our bow season open September 8th, I still haven't gone yet but might this week end, I usually plant clover for bee's but this year is so dry I don't think it will be up enough before the first frost so I didn't plant any this year, last year I planted 7 acres but it bloomed fine but with the drought this whole year it didn't produce any nectar so it was a waist but the deer waited for season to close before they plowed it to it, think it was the warm winter we had.......

Wow, 7 acres of clover. I planted about 1 and 3/4. I bowhunted in Jackson, Louisiana 3 yrs ago and we had a 6 acre plot planted with cowpeas and soybeans. The deer were tearing it up.

now, just great to see there still are hunters, all though this food plots kind of distort the "hunt" idea.
too bad it's against the law to hunt with bows around here, it would really be an adventure, to just roam the woods until you find the "mark"

It's been years since I had time to go bowhunting.  I wish I had time now.  I would love to buy a nice long bow to replace my compound...

One day I would like to buy a really nice longbow. I would really like a Robertson Styk bow, by Dick Robertson. He makes a real fine bow. I own two recurves that I mainly use for bowfishing, I have a longbow that a friend made that is real pretty and it shoots ok, but its not quite sweet enough to fall in love with. Did take a 135lb wild pig with it in the Honey Island swamp in Pearl River, Louisiana. The pig didn't go far at all. My friend hadn't been making bows long when he made this one for me, which I appreciate, but a Robertson styk bow would be sweeeet. I mainly use the compound lately, its fun, but not quite as rewarding as taking game with a traditional bow.

Mici, foodplots are good for the deer and legal, but I hear where you're coming from. Nothing like a good stalk.

Oh YEAH!  Have to go crossbow though.  Unable to hold draw anymore before back spasms and I almost hurt myself or someone else.

My son can't wait to use his bow!

Oh yeah.  My daughters can't wait for modern gun!
Everyone said it couldn't be done. But he with a chuckle replied, "I won't be one to say it is so, until I give it a try."  So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin.  If he had a worry he hid it and he started to sing as he tackled that thing that couldn't be done, and he did it.  (unknown)

I haven't eaten venison in two yrs and I miss it, I miss the fried backstrap and sausage, these are my favorites. Qa, its great to get kids interested in the outdoors, they will never run out of things to do or get bored, like I hear city people say. How can someone get bored? I just don't get it with all the world has to offer.

Been on a handful of hunts and have seen some deer, passed on all, not mature enough, having a blast. The weather is starting to get really nice.

I will call him Beauregard, he's a young deer that I now see all the time and he lives by our little cabin. He comes underneath my stand while I'm hunting. I grunt at him and he searches all around looking for that deer that grunted at him. He never looks up. He is a real pleasure to have around. The rut starts near christmas and the big bucks come then, hopefully in daylight. Happy hunting.

I own a high country compound bow. I have never hunted anything ever before. I finally feel confident enough to put a 8 of 10 arrows into a six inch circle at 35yrds. I have no one I know who hunts bow and I want the challenge of bowhunting only(no rifles) and no one to teach me. Hopefully, by next year I will be liscenced and ready for the season. My biggest fear, getting a deer and not knowing what to do w/ it. How to butcher it, get it out of woods etc. Like the rest of you, limited time and resources too.

Most hunters are a generous bunch and one would gladly show you the ropes. If you will be hunting public land get to know the game warden, he would be glad to help.

Bow season starts Oct 1 for me but I'm not sure if I'll be in a tree or on the ground perhaps trying to pop a pig with my new 22 rifle I purchased.

Waiting for that first real front to come through, had a weak one early last week but there's nothing quite like a brisk, chilly morning 20' up awaiting that first deer to walk out.

Been using the therma cell now for about 5-6 yrs and if you haven't tried it, it really does keep the skeeters away.

Good luck and let's hear some stories, be safe!

www.3riversarchery.com has a lot of pictures about hunts with bows from all over the world.  They are a good source for quality bows and arrows or supplies to build it yourself.
