I noticed in Bee Culture this month that Walter Kelley will have free shipping Thanksgiving week 19th to 21st.  Must be that time of the year again.

I wonder what would happen if I substituted "Walter Kelley" with "Bjorn Apiaries", and started to mention a discount here or there for my own business.  ;)

I dunno. Why don't you take out an ad in Bee Culture, see if someone mentions it, and find out what would happen?  ;)

Since you mentioned it, I do have an advertisement in Bee Culture at this time. I am part of NSQBA and we are listed in the classified section of the magazine.  ;)

But why feel obligated to advertise in Bee Culture to offer folks here on this forum a discount. Why the need to pay a middle man to get around site policy. In the best interest of members of Beemaster, I could probably offer better discounts if I did not have to pay expensive advertising costs to a magazine that adds little to the site.  :-D

Perhaps my point needs to be clarified.

Walter Kelly adds nothing to the site, but can be marketed to members on the site and given a pass in some way of thinking that members benefit from some discount or free shipping. And yet long term members, that are way less commercial and make far less than Walter Kelley, and contribute way more to the site, can not market or advertise on this site.

Not complaining. Just pointing out the irony.  ;)

BjornBee, I see that NSQBA is your creation...NSQBA.  I hope the queen breeder association is doing well.  I'll look for your ad.

AllenF was simply passing on the free shipping info as there are many Kelley customers on the website (including me) and I, for one, appreciate the heads-up.  I don't think he is the owner of Kelleys (though I could be (surprisingly) wrong ;) ) as you are of Bjorn Apiaries, so replacing "Kelleys" with "Bjorn" would mean you were breaking forum rules.   When you run your ads and include a special of discounted shipping or whatever in some of the trade magazines I certainly hope one of your customers mentions it here on the forum so other NSQBA customers will be sure to know about it.  Maybe you'll even pick up some new customers...maybe Kelley's will, too.   :)

When I first found Beemaster what I actually found was a cached copy of John's early blog.  I read a lot about his life, getting his first bees, going to the round track races, dealing with a wrecked car, all kinds of things thrown in with his beekeeping.  It was interesting to say the least and I thought to myself "this dude's got his head screwed on pretty good!".  When I finally got to the end of his blog and it started kinda trailing off into the sunset it was kinda like somebody was closing the curtains.  THEN I stumbled upon the actual Beemaster forum...and I've been around ever since.  ;)  It's John's creation and one thing I remember him saying early on was that he wanted this to be a non-commercial, ad-free site.  He has it posted in the forum by-laws now, too.  I appreciate his and the different moderators time and money in building the site and keeping it running.  Since John is the owner I guess he can have whatever rules he wants.  It's no biggie for me...but I'm not a vendor and don't intend to be.  :)

To me, the fact that commercial ads are absent on Beemaster is a breath of fresh air...very, very few websites of any kind are commercial free.  To be honest with you Bjorn, your link to your website and your presence here should cause any serious beekeeper to click on it.  I know that you contribute a lot of knowledge here and that knowledge has lead me to check out your website...advertising didn't send me there (your link did help, though).  And who knows, I might be a customer of yours one day...for now I'm building up with ferals, though. ;)

Best wishes,
Ed

I sent a few emails to BjornBee this year, first to see if I could order a nuc and then later in the year to get some queens.  I never heard back.  I will gladly pay shipping as well as higher prices to support the little guy who doesn't have the resources to advertise.  In my world businesses do not need to offer deals and gimmicks to get customers, just good customer service.

I posted that Kelley had free shipping to help some folks out to save a little.   I have never ordered from them.   The vast majority of stuff I order come from Brushy or Rossman.  I order a lot in December from Brushy because of free shipping.  But if I needed something now, I would go with some free shipping.   Always factor shipping when comparing prices.  Just something I always tell folks.

Allen,

I, and I'm sure others, appreciate the heads up about free shipping from any vendor.  We all have to buy supplies, and these days, every savings helps.  This has been a tough year financially for a lot of us.

As a newbee, my plan is to order ALL of my supplies during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday and Nov/Dec free shipping periods offered by the big vendors.  I eagerly await hearing of more companies free shipping dates, as it will save me a lot of money in setting up my hives.  I don't consider it promotion of one company or another--just useful news that can save people some money.
