Hello fellow beekeepers. Just joined up. Looking to learn some more about bees. This is my second year with bees. I've been making all my own equipment this past winter and enjoying it very much. I have a nice shop where we build a couple of kitchens and other built ins for the houses we build here in Maine. I think that I could buy the frames from Humble Abodes pretty cheaply but I enjoy the building and I have the wood so i'ts just part of the enjoyment factor. I'm home today because I got stung around the eyes 5 times yesterday and they sure swelled up today. I had hived 2 packages last friday and I had been working around the bees without a veil or no smoke. Since they didn't have anthing to protect they were very gentle untill yesterday. I went out to put in some pollen paties that I had made up and I had to take off the top feeder to put the bar on the top bars. In so doing they decided that they now had something to protect so I was run off in a hurry with manny bees stinging my face around my eyes. Funny how they zeroed in the most sensitive place. I had to go put on my veil an light up the smoker after that it was easy peasy. The other hive was a peice of cake. Today my eyes are almost swollen shut but they have started to go down some. I always ask myself after things like this why do I always have to learn the hard way. I guess in the school of experience you get the test before yuo get the lesson, something about it sticking with you longer.

I 'almost' always put my jacket and veil on with new bees (about 6 weeks) until the new queens brood have replaced all the in-house workers and guards. That way I will know the temperament of the hive, then I some times veil up if I am going deep into the hive. Still if I do not get stung 2 or 3 times a season, I think I am not doing enough for my bees. :cindi: -Mike

Welcome! We've been getting quite a few of you "mainiacs" signing up lately and are glad to have you! Don't worry, the bees have lots more "lessons" waiting for you :-D

Welcome to the forum, we always think we can just sneak in there and get it done.
Then you suddenly realize, you made a big mistake and run like the wind.
The problem is, you get reminded of that mistake for a few days lookin in the mirror! :jawdrop:

Thanks for the welcome. The eyes are more open today just bags under the eyes. I had this happen once before when I lived in Tenn. I ran a dairy for a private school and we ran about 7 hives there. I got into one late one afternoon removing suppers and the whole hive boiled out and attacked me. At that time I had a full suit on with a seperate veil. Three of the bees got up under the veil and got me on the left eyelid, left side of nose and left ear. I don't know who showed them where all the tender parts are but they sure found them that day. The one who stung me in the eyelid could not pull away and she was trying to fly around in circles to pull away but it wase't working. She was constantly beating my eye and it was a great distraction. I finaly ran through some thick brush and my helper managed to brush the rest off with a broom we had in the truck. I was in bed for three days on that one and had to see the doc and get a shot for swelling. I was afraid after that that I might become alergic to bee stings. So I was glad after yesterday to find out that I was'nt. I do enjoy working with the bees very much even though we have had some misunderstandings. I hope I'm learning.

Welcome to the forum. Do be careful, there's only two eyes in your skull. :) I'm pretty consistent with having at least a veil on when I take a cover off of a hive. I dread my first facial sting...closest I've come is the adam's apple.
