Title: Time of day for swarm
Post by: Carol on March 14, 2014, 05:32:00 pm
What time of day would it be most likely for them to swarm. I have one hive (Blue) that did an orientation around 1100 this morning and I think it just did a smaller one this afternoon about 4pm.   Is that normal? It's possible there were just a lot coming home from the Orange grove...but sure looked like a small orientation.

I moved a couple of medium frames that were in the deep to the super and the next day they were building new comb.

My "Pink" hive was building comb in the super before I moved a frame of honey up.

I've seen them swarm between 10am and 2pm. I caught one today at 1:30pm.

I haven't seen one yet this year.  But over the past several years, I have seen them from about 09:00 am to 04:00 pm or 5:00 pm.  There are a couple of trees close to me that I have caught several swarms in.  I got one out of it around lunch and just before dark there were two swarms in it.  All three were good size swarms.
If you are talking about your own hives, once you see a hive swarm you will remember it.  It looks like all the bees are like making a tornado, swirling around and in a little they are gone to a tree, bush or where ever.  They will stay there from a few minutes to a day or so.
I saw a hive swarming, they stopped in a small tree, I went to get hood and box to put them in, and as I was headed over to them they were gone.  Tried to see where to but after a few hundred yards, lost sight of them.

I saw a couple of swarms from my hive last year....loved orientation until then...now I get nervous when I see them. Just seemed funny that the same hive seemed to have orientation twice...but both times went back into the hive and settled down.

Do swarms have practice orientations?
