Title: Injury while making sugar blocks
Post by: Greg Peck on February 03, 2009, 01:12:02 am
I was off work today and decided to make some sugar blocks for my light hives. I made a batch but apparently did not get the mixture hot enough so they ended up too sloppy. So later in the day I re melted them and brought the mixture up to 265 degrees. My 3 year old son got home from daycare while I was doing the second batch and was playing out in the living room. So I was alone in the kitchen. I purred a glass container full of the 265 degree sugar mixture on the counter and put the pot back on the stove. Just then my son ran into the kitchen, said dad can I have some of this and shoved his hand into the container full of the mixture I had just pored. I screamed NO but it was to late he had already gotten his hand into the mixture. This happened in literally seconds. I grabbed him and ran his hand under cold water. The mixture came off quickly but his was burnt. We took him to the ER and were looking at a 6 hour wait!!! They got us in in about 1 hour due to his screaming. He has partial thickness burns on his thumb and first 3 fingers up to the second knuckle. We have to go to the burn center tomorrow to see just how bad it is and what will need to be done to fix it. Being that the burns are the whole way around the fingers they are afraid that the skin will come off all the tips and he may need skin grafts and loose feeling in the tips of his fingers. But the burn center will know more. Amazing how much a few seconds can change everything. If he had come in 15 seconds later the container would have been outside cooling . I am just glad he did not tip the container or pull it off the counter, this could have been much worse. He is feeling no pain now due to the heavy duty pain meds they gave him so at least he is not suffering now. I think I like feeding fondant better now.

Oh, that's just awful!  I'm sorry your son had to go through this.  It really is amazing how quickly things can go wrong when things are done in the best intentions.  I hope your son will be alright, and I'm sure that the doctors will take good care of him.  He will be in my thoughts.

i know you feel bad, but kids do that kind of stuff.  good thing is that they tend to heal well and quickly.  he'll be ok a lot sooner than you will be.

Wow, that sounds awful and could so easily happen to many of us who have children.  Do hope you get good news from the burn center tomorrow.

Greg best wishes to your son and to your whole family. It's dreadful to think of the pain he went through and how hard that must be for you. Thanks for sharing, it's a good reminder for us all, particularly those of us with kids. I really hope he recovers quickly, preferably without the need for skin grafts if at all possible.
Take care,
John.

Here's Wishing a Speedy Recovery for the Little Guy  :) Working with High Temps around the house whether you're cooking or repairing the plumbing presents safety issues. It is an excellent idea to go FONDANT, it eliminates work and incidents such as this. I have been feeding my girls fondant from Dawn Foods, thanks to BjornBee for directing me to the source in Lancaster, Pa.

Get well soon. Ironically, honey will help those burns.

I have a friend who had a similar type burn when she was a child.  they grafted skin from her hips onto her fingers, and the scarring isn't readily noticible.  She has full hand function.

Make sure they keep up with the pain meds.  She says the worst part was when they would wash it off to prevent infection. that caused serious pain.

Best wishes to little one, and to you.  My support and sympathy is with you.

Really sorry to hear about your little boys burn.  I hope the healing goes quickly and with little pain.
I was glad to hear you call what you were making, "sugar blocks".  I got the recipe for fondant off of this site, thinking it was fondant, I made some and it turned out to be hard candy.  For the people that call it fondant, there is a difference.  I had thought I would rather buy bakers fondant, now I know I will.  Although, I just found a recipe using, one bag of mini marshmallows, 2 Tbs water, and 2 lbs of powdered sugar.  I may give that recipe a try even tho it will involve a lot of kneading the sugar into fondant.

Greg, oh that made my heart break when I read what happened to your young boy.  Oh such pain.  There is nothing worse in this world than to see one's own child cry with that heartbreaking, wrenching cry, that one of deep pain.  I do not envy your position.  You must not look back, you cannot change history, you can only learn by this.  A good way to look at it is, and to thank your lucky stars above, as you have already, I know, that he did not pull the container down off the counter, onto himself.

He will heal.  The miracles of modern day medicine are nothing short of miraculous, things will be well.

Do remember to use honey for that healing.  Honey is a miracle in itself with the healing that it can provide, and it will also cause relief from pain.  Remember, bacteria cannot grow in honey, the pH is too, low, that is one of the reasons for the healing properties.  Do you remember my story of how much I worked on that young girl that had the bad burn from boiling tea?  I used colloidal silver water for healing too, but you don't NEED to use that, it is only another alternative for healing, I link the post, if you are interested -- the power of honey must never be overlooked.  Here are a few posts that speak of honey healing (and if you wish Colloidal silver water -- you can purchase it at the health food store, expensive, but it can be bought).  If you believe in "alternative" cures, do not turn your back here.....

Poor little fella!  Yes, they do this stuff so fast!  Burns are so nasty and painful!  Its hard to imagine, I just get a fingernail size burn and i'm in agony! (of course I don't get the good drugs for that!)

On the bright side, they heal so fast at that age! (my first 2 were in the med center every other month at that age!)

Greg:  Sorry to hear of your little's boy's mishap.  I got a pretty bad burn on my hand from boiling grease, and while it hurt and required debridement, it healed fine.  The big issue will be keeping it clean and infection free.  (at least that was what they told me with my burn).   Wishing you the best...

Greg, I wish that little man a speedy and full recovery, so sorry this happened.

One thing to consider in all this however. If this episode leaves some scarring your boy can tell those who ask "My Dad and I were cooking feed for our honeybees!" Instant celebrity. If I were he I'd play it up for the girls, better than any puppy on a leash.

Hold him tight and give him an extra hug on our behalf and please tell him all the guys and gals from beemaster are thinking of him.

Thanks everyone for your concern and words of encouragement. It is nice to know you all care.

We went to the burn center this morning for what was to be a one hour appointment. However they admitted him for the night in order to be able to get him into surgery in the morning. She said the only reason he had to be admitted was basically a procedural thing to get to the top of the surgery list to get the burns cleaned up ASAP. They are going to “remove all the dead tissue” in the morning then apply a synthetic skin which will prevent infections. If all goes well, and the doc said she thinks it will, the synthetic skin will fall off in a few weeks and new skin will be underneath. His finger nails may take much longer to get back to normal though. If this treatment does not work then there will be skin grafts and other treatments. The doc said absolute worse case could be the loss of the tips of his fingers, but she said that would be only if major infections set in which would be in issue if he was not getting this surgery tomorrow. I am going to ask about the honey for treatment, I had read a lot about it in the past.

He is not in any pain even without constant pain meds. He got up this morning 10 hours after his last pain meds and said it did not hurt. He is just angry that his hand is all wrapped up and he can not use it to play with. This concerns me that he has suffered nerve damage, but the docs did not seem to think it was in issue.

So the burn center is about 1.5 hours away and we will be traveling there 2 times a week for a few weeks then once a week for several more weeks.

Thanks again everyone.

Bjorn This happened after I called you. I figured that I would just make the sugar blocks rather then run to Lancaster to get the fondant. So this is your fault for not keeping fondant on hand for me when I need it. (I am totally joking about the your fault thing)

The big issue will be keeping it clean and infection free.  (at least that was what they told me with my burn).   Wishing you the best...

Greg, you are on the right track, and yes, Brian of PCF, keeping it clean and infection free is what will cause the healing.  That is why I am saying to use honey, bacteria cannot grow in the low pH of the honey medium.  Greg, do that research you say you are going to do about honey -- do not procrastinate.  That is one of the most important things you can do for your Son right now, be informed, learn how to help the doctors to treat this child.  I know that you will.  My thoughts are there with you and this child.  Have a great and wonderful day, take care, attract that health.  Cindi

We got home Wednesday evening and everything is going well. The damage was not as bad as they had anticipated. The surgery went well and they expect him to get all his feeling back and be back to normal in a few weeks. He is not allowed to go back to preschool for 2 weeks so he will be going to work with myself or my wife and staying with friends.

I took him back to the burn center today to get his bandages changed and the wound checked out. They said it looked like it was healing well and after our next visit on Monday he should only have to come back once a week. So he is doing good. Thanks again everyone for your concern.

Hi Greg,
I hope everything turns out well. Kids are pretty resilient. When I was 2 years old I stuck two of my fingers into something worse that actually ate (burned) off 1/2 of each finger. Skin grafts are no fun and at 2 years old you grow so quick that they are grafted every year for many years. I am really glad that your son's injury was not worse.

I don't know how I missed this post originally! I am so sorry to hear about your boy but what a relief (to you, most of all!) that the injuries are not as bad as first thought.

I will be thinking of you guys and wishing for a speedy and painless recovery.

When i got electecuted couple years ago i got 3rd degee or worse burns on my hands(figers) and feet. I used mostly honey for the wound dressing and it healed up very fast. I also used it in other incidents and for me it worked better than other stuff.

Hope your son gets well fast

Greg, so wonderful, listen, still, put and slap that honey on thickly beneath any bandages, if there is still some work to do on healing.  Honey speeds the healing/scarring process, listen, it is true.....Ivan is another testament to that....have a most awesomely great and wonderful day, Cindi

Cindi, I asked one of the burn doctors about using honey. she made a funny face and said she has heard of "lay people" using honey for small burns, and that she could see how it could help some, but please dont apply it to Aidan's burn do to the Bio-brain glove they put on. She said that she has worked with the treatment they are using for Aidan for a long time and it works. She probably was not the right doc to talk to about it because I think she was a little stuck on herself (she was not his regular doc) But I think I will trust their judgment on this one. I still believe in the honeys healing power but I am not going to risk Aidan's treatment for it. Besides that, the bio-brain glove they have on him keeps everything out of the wound so I do not think that the honey will have any way to get in to do any good. I will have to print some info out and give it to the docs next time I go up there.

Oh Greg, I totally understand what you are saying.  Do as the doctors are asking, honey is an ALTERNATIVE healer.  I will make some further comments.  The glove that the doctors have given to your child will no doubt have a marvelous work and a wonder.  Do as they ask for surely, I am not suggesting that you go against what they are saying.  Honey and colloidal silver water ARE used in many hospitals that do not have their minds closed to these alternatives, I know that, I have read about that too.  This particular hospital just isn't "that way".

Lay people.  Sorry, I take offence at that.  Yes, we honey healers do not hold a degree in healing, but I have seen miracles with honey curing, nothing short of that.  This doctor that used that awful term "lay people" has seen miracles with more advanced healing, I do not doubt that one little bit either.  I guess I could accept being called a "lay person", because I am not trained for years in the medical field, it just struck a wrong chord with me.  Sorry, sometimes I need to vent.

Carry on Greg as instructed, we do know that this glove will be a wonderful tool for healing.  The depth of the damage done to your son is too deep to now think about the "alternative" medicines.  When the glove can come off of your child, and still more healing is required, but in shorter amounts, and if there are bandages that are to be applied, as the parents' work, then, at that point, I would recommend that you use honey for healing.  Wait until that point in time, where you need not rely totally upon the miracles of the modern day "professional peoples".

Oh Greg, my thoughts with you and this child, he will heal, he will be whole, believe in him and the power he holds within to heal himself too.  Children are so pure in their person that they haven't been slighted with the doubt that we as adults have.  He believes he will heal, he will heal, it is within his body to bring this power out, and he will. Have that most wonderful and beautifully awesome day, love our lives we live, we are all so fortunate to be alive, attract great health.  Cindi

I convinced my wife to use honey on some sores she had that were continually being agrivated from her work.  the honey healed her sores where the prescibed medications did not.
I'm diabetic and often get sores on my lower legs and feet from nothing more that putting my boots on and off.  Honey heals them up faster than any medicated oitment can and also seems to prevent as much soreness as I would otherwise experience or did experience before I started using honey as a healing agent.
We now keep and 8 oz jar in the medicine cabinet just for applying to open sores, with or without a bandage.

This sounds like a very scary accident. I am glad to hear he is well on his way in his treatment/healing. Cindi, it's no surprise the doctor gave a 'funny look' when asked about honey. If it doesn't come from an chem lab they don't get it...In this case, at this time, Greg is right on to follow the MDs advice to a tee. (you can always feed him honey!! that'll make him smile :-\) The glove sounds good, I had a friend that was seriously burned at my home years ago and she had to endure daily debri-ing of her wounds. It was very stressful. Sounds like with surgery and the "glove" your son is escaping some of that misery. Now to work on the flexiblility...squeeze balls? Take care, continued prayers for your son.

Brian, I keep that jar of therapeutic honey in the cabinet too, only my jar has propolis particles suspended in it, I think this even magnifies the healing of honey.

When I used so much honey on the arm of that little girl that was burned by the tea, my Daughter had taken her to the doctor for a followup.  The doctor asked my Daughter what was used for such incredible healing.  My Daughter was reluctant to tell her, because she was pretty sure the doctor would give her "that funny look" when she told her honey and colloidal silver water.  My Daughter just though oh well, and told the doctor what I had been using for helping to heal.  The doctor told my Daughter in these words that I will never forget:  "Tell your Mother to keep on using those healing products, they have worked a miracle".  I will NEVER forget these words that came from that professional, smiling.  Have a most wonderful and awesome life, day, health, Cindi

Greg, I am sorry to say that I am just reading about your precious little ones accident. I am so sorry about that. Sounds like he is doing very well. Our little 2 yr old did a very similiar thing years ago. Very difficult time. Back and forth to the burn center for about 6 months. Best of luck. They do heal very quickly but it breaks your heart in the meantime. I would rather lose a limb that watch my kids in pain.
We were very lucky to have a great burn center close by only about 30 mins away.
there are great support groups at those places too, look into them if you get a chance it helped us tremendously.
Our prayers are with you guys, keep us posted.

Greg,
I do hope your son heals quickly and is able to put this accident behind him.  It is probably worse on you and your wife.  As parents we always want to take the pain away from our children and when we can't it's hard on us.  Sounds as though you are getting him the right care and he will mend.  You have reminded us all that we need to be so careful when young children are around the kitchen.

I wish your son and speedy recovery.
