Title: JP & Schawee Remove Bees From Mini-storage In Laplace, Louisiana
Post by: JP on March 19, 2011, 10:27:26 am
A little bit of a pain since we had to go into the sheetrock ceiling and also the exterior soffit section, but we got it done. Schawee will go through the hive today and take some video footage. Hopefully he finds the queen, which we believe we vacuumed.

I don't care what Schawee tells you folks, he undoubtedly loves pepper steak!

Another good one JP and Schawee!

From the shadows I am taking the cutout was on the north side of the building? Also what was the color of the roof?

Before today I was thinking that Schawee stomach was a bit more buff than last year. It appears that the diet WAS working.  :-D

Thx,

Jay

It was on the East side of the building, roof, light blue,  Schawee's stomach must have been causing the shade.  :-D

Hi JP,

I really enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them.  Thanks.  I am wondering about your bee vac.  Did you buy one, if so what kind is it, or build it yourself?

Thanks

Tom

Great video.   I really like it when you stuck the camera up in the hole.   And at the end, I thought we were going to see just how much pepper steak was on that plate. (plates?)  Great video guys.  Hope the queen was in the vac cage.

The only way to solve the mystery of what is being eaten during lunch is to bring the camera in and let us watch you both eat.  Actually it might be a good way for you guys to cut back on your portions since everyone will be watching. :-D :-D

Thanks also for the great video on the bee removal. This one was way too complicated for me to totally understand the situation.

So you believe the queen was in the box of vacuumed bees.

So you just took those bees home??

What you left was a super with brood and you left that near the opening where the bees are flying in and out. This is enough for the remaining bees to leave that wall and go inside the super?? Even though there isn't any queen in the super??

When you went back to pick up the super, were all the bees inside the super??

Thanks for sharing and I also thought the camera closeup was very cool.

Annette

annette,we vaced about 5#of bees and we added them to the deep that had the brood comb in it when it got dark.went through the bees today to look for the queen and didn"t find her, it just was to many bees to try and find her.i added a medium with foundation so the bees  can spread out so when i check tomorrow it would make it easyer to find her.   schawee

Annette, here's a quick (well... :-D ) summary: the bees started building their hive in the soffit on the east side of the building. The void space allowed them to expand the colony westwardly which brought the comb sections beyond & over the interior wall and into the ceiling of the first floor room.

It would have been structurally impossible to remove the entire hive from the soffit nor the ceiling space in the upper room, so we had no choice but to go in from each side of the wall.

When the comb sections were removed from within the room's ceiling it caused the bees to gravitate into the soffit. Once the combs from the soffit were removed it caused the bees to gravitate into the ceiling. 99.9% of the bees on this job had to be vacuumed.

The remaining bees were coerced into the nuc which contained (the comb sections) & some bees that were transferred when the comb sections were added to the nuc. This nuc was secured at the top of the ladder and left there until dark to attract any bees that were not vacuumed.

After dark we transferred everything from the nuc into a deep & shook all of the bees we vacuumed into a full deep on site.

We both firmly believe the queen is in the new set up because they are acting queenright, no roar & the bees are at peace.

Hopefully Schawee will find her soon but if he does not, there are comb sections that have eggs/young larvae. If they for some reason do not have a queen they should be making queen cells by now, if not Schawee will give them a queen.

I appreciate you posting all the videos JP. I watch and try to learn from you guys. I lived in LaPlace for about 5 years in the mid eighties. Worked at Bayou Steel. Enjoy watching you and Bruce ribbing each other. I met you guys last year at Bud's. Sorry I can't make it this year. It hits on me & my wife's 30 year wedding anniversary. Have fun!

Nice Schawee. Glad you found her. I could be wrong, but I thought she was laying an egg into a cell while you were video taping her.

Thanks JP for the explanation of the cutout. All I know is, it sounds really difficult.
