Sugar syrup and comb building in the fall...??
« on: September 28, 2012, 11:50:50 am »
Ok, this is this newbee's first autumn/fall with honey bees and I've got a question.  Hopefully, I can get my questions explained without too much confusion from me.  :)

I've got a fairly strong, week old cutout in the backyard that I'm feeding syrup...fed a gallon of 1:1 and now I'm starting on 5:3.  The 7-day forecast shows lows in the lower 60's and highs in the lower 80's with chances of rain on most days.

Will the bees normally draw comb if a nectar flow is on and they need somewhere to store it...regardless of time of year?  In this case we're talking sugar syrup along with a goldenrod flow going on.  Is building comb more "time of year" dependent or more dependent upon "needs"?

I'm a little concerned that the bees may be back-filling the areas of cut-out brood comb that they emptied of larvae a day or two after the cutout and may be cramping the queen's laying space.    We've got 53% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow, but I'm hoping I can inspect the hive at some point...it will have been basically 10 days since we hived them.

Bottom line questions...  Will bees draw comb okay during autumn if resources are available and comb needed?  Does time of year affect comb building to a great degree?

Comments and suggestions are welcomed!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Ed

Keep an eye on them.   They will build out if it is needed.   Also, brood population falls through the year from the spring time high.   Keep an eye on them to keep them from being honey bound.

If you have warm weather and the bees need room to store whatever is there to hoard, they will draw comb.  This fall I had to shake twentysome colonies off AFB diseased comb onto foundation.  They have been drawing comb till present and half or better are now heavy enough in two boxes to winter here.  It takes a minimum of 75 pounds here.  The comb was pretty well drawn with virtually no drone comb and it was on Mann Lake Plastic frames---everything that is not supposed to work, so yes, it was so simple that even I who once got the hell stung out of him because of handling banana barehanded in a hive.   But I unlike some, only give out advice I k now to be sound and not potentially dangerous.

Thanks for the info, Vance G.  Folks do err with things, like making jokes that one person out of many takes offense to, and even with things more serious...why, I even know of a guy who beat his wife over the head with the bible so much that he drove her away from their marriage and possibly even away from the Truth of God.  That is very sad.  Probably a lot of unforgiveness in him that fosters much bitterness...that's where he misses the point, to be forgiven he must first forgive and sometimes forgiving one's self is the hardest to forgive. :(

Thanks again for the feedback, Vance G, have a good evening.

eh?  That's and odd statement to make.  I've no need to get my life back together as it is fine...me and my wife are celebrating 20+ years of marriage and we have a couple of beautiful grandkids...life is good and I thank God for it all each day.  Well, things could be better with some different leadership in this country, but that's a different story.   I do enjoy my bees...no comfort needed from them, though.  ;)

The bees were flying wide open this morning.  A cloud of bees in front of each hive, house bees coming of age to orient.  And the sky was crowded with foraging bees.  The goldenrod is in full flow along with the tar weed.  The cutout appears to be adapting to life in the Langstroth quiet nicely...for now.  I just hope it lasts! :)

Well you spoke of beating a woman with a bible or some such and I just assumed there were problems.   just read the instructions in Corinthians and it will be OK.

You've got to do more than just read it, Vance.
