Are your bees early risers?
« on: February 14, 2009, 02:40:51 am »
Do your bees get up early? If the temperature is right what time are your bees usually going by?

Sincerely,
Brendhan

My bees always beat me out of bed so I assume they are out to work with day break.  They do go to bed before I do though, they tuck themselves in around sun set and I stay up for Leno.

This mornings temp was lower 60's. They started about 30 min. after the sun hit the hives. There were a few earlier, but looked more like cleansing flights than going to work.

I have always been aware that not all colonies are the same in this department. I have several that fly at first light but others that sleep in a little. Perhaps the ones that slept in are like you Brendhan and had margaritas the night before. :-*

We've got ten hives. Two of them always start quite a bit earlier and at much cooler temps than the others.  And one hive that absolutely won't fly before the temp hits about 55F.

If the temp is right, they are out before the sun rises.

I live in the woods - lots of shade. In the summer, when it's daylight between 6am and 7am, my girls typically don't get busy until around 10am.

That's about right for me too.  I'd say by 9 AM they are going full tilt but I do see some flying as early as 7-7:30.
