Way to rig frames?
« on: June 20, 2013, 12:32:17 pm »
I did a "cut out" on Sunday and used the last of my frames up. I just got asked to remove another hive on a construction site at work- they'll have a boom lift for me on Saturday but I don't think I have any open frames to attach the comb too. Too late to order some...

This is not a huge hive - maybe 1'x1.5' exposed, under scaffolding.

Any ideas on how to "rig" some frames?

just make top bars until you make or get frames. you will have to redo it, if you want a framed situation, but the bees won't care all that much in the meantime. Or if you have other hives that are not developed yet or drawn on, or have frames you can use, you can rob peter to save paul a bit.
some people use hairnet clamps, the plastic spring wide clam shaped hair holder things for girls to take comb and wire it to a top bar. you simply tie the clip to the underside of the top bar, open it up, put the comb in it and let it clamp down on the top. fairly easy really.

Buy some lath.  It should be 3/8" thick by 1 1/2" wide.  Rip it in half.  Cut it to 19" lengths.  These are top bars.   Get some old phone cable and use double strands to "sew" the old black combs to the these top bars.  It will not work for white comb and certainly won't work for honey comb (I would scrap all of that as it's too messy anyway).

This is a hive that just started building under the construction scaffold so I imagine all comb is fairly new- a few months maybe?  You can see it just below the cantilevered portion of the scaffolding.

I may try the "hair clip" method...

Doesn't look like they been there that long and the comb will most likely be salvageable. If you have a bee vac just suck them up and do a shake out in your bee yard.

More to be desired are they than gold, yea ,than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

The comb will be too new and thin to attach to any bars or frames. I agree with blanc.
