Camp House cut-out
« on: April 19, 2013, 12:34:31 pm »
J.C. Small and I removed a hive yesterday from a old camp house on the Alabama river. I couldn't find any eggs and there was very little brood. There were several open Queen cells and we did get the Queen, (she appears to be mated). Our only theory is that this is the new queen, after a swarm and she hasn't started laying yet. I have them set up at my house so we'll soon find out. What's your thoughts on the lack of eggs and brood?
Thanks......David

David ,
She is probably a new Q. They swarmed and the brood pretty much hatched out. I have a OB hive that swarmed with only 2 deeps filled and 6 medium frames empty. They left and we could see some Q cups in the bottom. I expected to see a new Q in about 9 days. All of the visible brood hatched and we still did not see a Q. I pushed my luck it for another week and was about to take it outside and take it apart and add new eggs and brood when my wife spotted the new Q. It took another week before she started laying eggs. there are only a handfull of bees left but the new brood is just about to hatch.

Hopefully the brood will keep your bees locked to your new hive. Good luck.

Every time I have done a cutout with no brood and a queen the thing absconds with in a week. So I would say drop some frames from another hive to help lock them in the hive.

Good job! Looks like they had some of that comb pretty well knotted up huh?

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Thanks everyone for the kind words, it was a fun job and yes Scott, the comb was a MESS. I have a queen excluder/includer on the bottom board. I'll give them a few days before I remove it and hopefully they'll stay.    David
