Is the hive raising a queen?
« on: May 27, 2012, 11:52:48 am »
Hi all,
My son and I did a vac out of a hive in a tree. The home owner was going to get rid of it. We got all of the bees we could but I know we missed some and probably didn't get the queen. We put the bees in a 5 frame deep nuc box with a frame of capped brood, larva and I hoped eggs. We also put in 4 frames with foundation. This was Tuesday of last week. Because the flow is pretty much over, we decided to put a feeder on the box so the bees would have the nourishment they need to keep rebuilding. We did this yesterday (Saturday). While I had the top off we checked and they have queen cells built with royal jelly inside. The cells were built on the bottom of the frame with the brood. Is this a sure sign they are raising a queen?

Thanks everyone!

Rodger J.

Yep. Congratulations you should have a laying queen in 4 - 5 weeks. Continue with the feeding.

Good Luck,

Steve

Was there a larva inside the queen cell along with the royal jelly?

S.M.N., they don't put royal jelly in cells without larva.

It still gets me everytime when I open that nuc up, when it's time, and I see that beautiful young queen.

We are waiting for the arrival. Started a trap out today. Hope we can get them to raise a queen also.

Thanks!
