Title: Hen Spurs?
Post by: Jerrymac on May 23, 2009, 10:57:34 am
I did not know hens grew spurs. I'm not talking some small bump on the leg, these are just as long as the spurs on the roosters.

They get some smaller spurs but I had never had anything on my hens like the roosters.
How old are they? Are they using them on you yet?
I don't know if hens get all Jackie Chan like the roosters do and come at you with them feet flying.
I recently took a couple of Jackie Chans to the auction.

I hadn't even noticed it until yesterday I was watching one of them walking across the yard. I thought, "Naw, that's her rear toe I'm seeing." I watched more closely and sure enough there it was. This morning when I let them out I was checking all of them and tried to catch the one but she wasn't having any of it. But there was another one that also had spurs. Ant they are almost as long as the roosters.

These two were a year old last month. No they haven't used them on me. I did how ever see a couple of hens going at it like roosters do. So I guess they could use them that way.

Jerry, holy wacking doodles!!!  What you got going on there, smiling....Are you sure that they are hens?  I would question that for sure, but I am sure you must know if they are a year old.  Why don't you do some research on it, google chicken spurs....never mind...I'll do it for you.  Beautiful days loving and living this great life, health.  Cindi

Look at this post at backyard chickens

There are other links that tell about chickens with spurs, guess it is more common that I thought too, smiling.

They are either hens or of some other sexual orientation.  And since eggs pop out of them on a regular bases I would have to lean toward hen with weapon.  :-D
