I cannot believe that buzzbee and I have beat Cindi in our welcome. You will learn more about that inside joke later. But welcome, you will find a great group of people here who (sometimes strangely) love bees. My kids think I am crazy but they are coming around. Take your time and learn, as you can see I am only about a year ahead of you. There is a lot to learn, it is worth it. Look forward to learning with you.

Ha! Ha! I beat her also.

Anyway Heather welcome to the forum. My name is Annette and I am a third year beekeeper in Placerville California. I wish you well with the new hobby you will come to love.

I started with 1 bee hive and now at the moment have 2. (I just lost one last month). It is a very challenging hobby and someone here on this forum once told me that it is not for the faint of heart. There are more rewarding moments to beekeeping, but things do go wrong occasionally and there are losses. If you read through the posts you will see that if it isn't one thing, it is another.

The main thing is total commitment to helping these bees survive and that means being there and doing the necessary work involved even if you do not feel like it.  I even plan my vacations around the bees now. Well thats just me.

On a more upbeat side, it will open up a whole other world for you, the world of flowers and nature and that beautiful sound of buzzing that will warm your heart whenever you hear it and see those little creatures foraging.  Why I would even go as far as to say they can help you grow as a person especially when you experience how selfless they are to each other. (I am always thinking I wish people were like bees)

Anyway, Good luck and keep posting and asking for help.

Annette

Heather, welcome to our forum.  This will be a place that will be your tool for learning how to keep bees.  You will make friends, and as you can see, there is a lot of friendly kidding on our forum, we are a friendly group, this you will see.  Spend time with us, tell us your life stories and tales, particularly when you get your bees.  We are all here to listen and enjoy life.

Now all you forum friends, I am thinking that you are all turning into brats!!!  Just like JP, the biggest one of all, hee, hee.  Have a most beautiful and wonderful day, love our lives we live.  Cindi

I agree that we are brats Cindi, but as you know, "you only tease the ones that you love" You have been the inspiration to many. Therefore you become the target to even more. I look forward to the day we all get to meet face to face. It may be in heaven or hell , but I look forward to the day none the less. As a few people have portrayed, Heather, you will have a good time here. Get your knowledge base started and then get your bees. The search option here is awesome and we will all be here to help. Good times are ahead of you with these energetic little girls.

Heather, there are a bunch of stinky old men here  :-P ;) :) :) :), oops, I meant to say sticky, hee, hee.  I say that as kidding, we have wonderful men in our forum, you will get to love them alot.....We are that group you will enjoy.  Personally Heather, I would wait and study throughout the wintertime, and then in the late spring get your bees.  That will give you lots of time to really understand the world of the honeybee so much more, you will be more comfortable with your ease of their care.  And the anticipation of getting your bees in the spring will be so deep, it will make your head swim, hee, hee.  Beautiful and most wonderful day, Cindi

Oh man,...I missed the welcome wagon.  :(
So, may I bring up the rear, Cindi?
Anyways, Heather, welcome to the forums!
I agree with Annette...bees will open your whole world up!
You will see things in such a different light from now on! I've said, again and again, that I feel most people sort of get a calling to do bees. Beekeeping, to me, is a gift from God. Its a way He shows you secret things about life in general, things that non beekeepers dont get to see. This is hard to explain but i bet by this time next year you will know what I'm talking about :)
Theres still bees to be had this time of year, especially in your area. But, if you have to wait till spring, you'll learn the first step to beekeeping.....patience...And when your first bees arrive, you'll feel liike a little kid again!!..Its such a cooool feeling when you can move around your 30,000 bees and not get stung..Its kinda cool for when you get your first sting too!...Its kinda like being "Branded" as a beekeeper!
I started bees last spring..Now I'm ate up with beekeeping! As are most people here! I used to think that beekeeping was so "Square"...never thought twice about seeing a hive or a person in a bee suit. Beekeeping, to me, was just a thing that unknown people do. Nobody i knew had ever mentioned it or anything....Now,....Its totally different!!..I now see beekeeping as the "Coolest" thing there is! Its like a "Secret Society" kind of! Only WE know whats really cool in the world!
Well,..Thats all.....Except for telling you to ask lots of questions...read some books..and, start putting money aside! :)
Oh yeh,....We're all sticky guys here!...Its the honey that makes us this way!!

your friend,
john

If you have ants in your pants get you a nuc and you can add them to a deep, if they don't take off you can condense them again to nuc size, its all good!

Hello!

SE Arizona, huh?  You're not that far from Dee Lusby, who has done a lot of work with "natural" beekeeping:

Maybe you could contact her & she could get you connected with some other beekeepers in your area.

Talk about late.... I didn't even know there was a welcome wagon!

Its not nice you guys left me out in the woods.

Its all fine, I don't really do welcomes or good bys - we all cross paths as we are meant to.

So, someone going to ask how many hives she wants to have?
(Are going to have a side bet how many she has in 2 years?  :-D)

[I HAPPENED TO NOTICE THAT EVEN MY SODA RECYCLING CAN DOESNT HAVE THE USUAL SWARM OF BEES AROUND IT THIS YEAR]

Um... here we call those bees, wasps. Yellow jackets more specifically. And they aren't very welcome around my apiaries. They are lazy robbers of hard earned honey.
Maybe we can have an entomology class later?

Bottom line is you will very muchy enjoy the bees and for the most part bee people. "The Most Part" We look forward to including you into the familiy of beeks.

Ummmm, maybe you are more like Irwin and SgtMaj, two other recent members who didn't seem to get the "extended" welcome committee either.  Wonder what it could be :?

I'm with ya on that too..But it is OK, Cindi does such a great job she is covering for us..... If ya stick around long enough I'll get to know ya (like my recent 2 buddies Irwin and SgtMaj :-D)

Give them some time and they will get to it.  They're still too giddy.

Ya, and what is all the yelling, it gets hard on my eyes real quick......

Anyway, welcome to the forum Heather.  Hopefully you'll stick around and not disappoint the "extended" welcome committee ;)
