My homemade extractor
« on: June 23, 2013, 09:58:55 pm »
I'm almost done with my extractor, just need to bend up a bracket for the motor and speed controller. It's turned out pretty good, but I've already found some things I'd do different if I do it again. Look it over and give me some constructive criticism. Thanks,RC

RC,
I think it looks AWESOME!  Very nicely done!

It looks like there's a whole in the center bottom, is the plan just to have a catch bucket beneath it?

Very nice job. How is the bottom bearing support secured, is it welded in ?

Thanks, Guys.
Moots - It is a bottom center drain, I have a piece of sanitary tubing that runs from underneath to a bucket.
Sparky-The bottom support straddles a couple of tabs welded to the inside of the drum. The support is 2" SS channel and I coped it to fit the inside of the drum. It's a slip fit so that it's held in place, but would still be easy to pull apart for cleaning, if need be.
I hope to finish it this week, maybe I can do a test run next weekend.

Admittedly I haven't seen many extractors and may have just seen the cheap ones.. but this looks far more durable than those.

Yeah, it's way overbuilt. I made it from material left over from several other projects, which really kept it cheap.
I'd never seen an extractor in person, just pictures, so I didn't know how heavy to build it. I recently saw an extractor and realized that I had built it much heavier than it needs to be. But, it's ok, it'll work.

Don't be so sure.  You'll probably be surprised at how heavy nine frames full of honey are and the resulting inertia forces when they start going round and round and round.

Have fun

As far as any home made extractor that I've seen posted, you did an exceptional job.   X:X  Post pics of the top end when it's done.
