What to do with full frames etc...
« on: July 01, 2008, 10:48:18 am »
The scenario:

2 brood deeps, 1 shallow super

The 2 other colonies are mediums.

When the brood deeps get full, and if I only want 2 brood deeps, how do I give the deeps more room?  Am I to remove frames of honey?

This part of beekeeping still confuses me.

Many thanks~*~

if you dont use meds, extract a frame or two and re-insert. I usually do nothing. I add supers and they put honey where they need it. Dont know your weather, but its their winter stores. they will use some of it up when flow lessens and they still have brood needs. Dont be confused the bees arent. They know what they are doing.

The 2 outside frames (1 & 10) are always storage frames and almost never used for rearing brood.  Just pull those 2 frames (on each box if you like) replacing them with drawn or undrawn frames.    You can get several supers worth of honey per year off of a 2 deep box hive with only 4 extra frames by rotating the storage frames.

It is an 8 frame deep.  Just remove 1&8?  Extract and replace?  That will keep them from swarming?

I thought it was the brood they needed more room to grow with??

See old ya I am confused! :-\

Keeping the brood chamber open is basically the same thing, just make the frames you pull the out 2 frames of the brood chamber which is frames 2 & 7 in an 8 frame.

Am I to remove frames of honey?

I was answering how to harvest honey from a hive limited to 2 brood chambers with no honey supers.

Sorry for the confusion.  :-/
