HIBISCUS PLANT
« on: July 10, 2006, 10:47:13 am »
I HAVE A HIBISCUS PLANT THAT I MOVED IN THE WINTER TO A NEW FULL SUN LOCATION. THE PLANT DID WELL AT START WITH CHUTES COMING OUT OF THE ROOT BALL AND PUTTING ON BUDS FOR BLOOMING. HAD ABOUT 12 CHUTES 3 FOOT TALL. THEN IT STARTED. ONE CHUTE WOULD WILT AND SHRIVEL UP LIKE YOU SPRAYED IT WITH HOT WATER OR ROUNDUP. I WOULD REMOVE IT AND THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS THE SAME THING WOULD HAPPEN TO A DIFFERENT CHUTE, AND THIS HAS KEPT GOING ON WITH NEW CHUTES IMMERGING AND OLD UNBLOOMED CHUTES DYING.  I HAVE APPLIED A NEMATODE  TREATMENT AND MADE SURE IT HAS HAD WATER BUT NOT TOO MUCH. THE PLANT LOOKS HEALTHY BUT ALL OF SUDDEN ONE CHUTE WILL WILT AND DIE. HELP.

when you cut the shoots if they are discolored INSIDE then it is root rot and the plant is doomed.  if there are little holes around soil level then you have borers.   they also leave a hole down the center of the stem.   hibiscus is easy to root from cuttings of healthy stems no more than a year old (not the new green growth).
