Column Removal
« on: April 13, 2008, 12:03:47 am »
This colony swarmed out majorly about two weeks ago according to the home owner. They had a big cluster in the tree by the street he told me. I found a queen that to me looks to be a virgin, she's quick and very active, unless she's a dud. There were no eggs, about 5 queen cells, but none that looked like they were drawn to fruition, cups more or less.

Anyway, they had the entire family over to watch the event. They got to try some honey and watch me get stung right on the nasal septum. Man I saw stars!!

JP, nice pictures, and when are you gonna show us your great big, swollen up ol' nose, hee, hee.  If the hive swarmed out 2 weeks ago, there would have soon been eggs, takes the queen about 2 weeks from emergence to laying.  Beautiful and wonderful day in this great ol' life.  Cindi

Cindi, I will find out when they swarmed out. I think they said about two weeks ago.

As for my nose, it didn't swell up, at least noone said anything, got the stinger out quickly though. Reminds me of one I did the other night, one got in my veil and flew inside ny left nostril, I managed to thump it out and it went right back in, of course all this took place in a very short time frame, like a couple of seconds, weird thing, I managed to not it stung,

Nose stings are not fun, you see stars!

They sure had a real nice home--that's a mansion by bee standards.  Great pics.

I cant see the pics too well. Is the column load bearing itself, or does it have an insert the bees worked around? I ask, b/c i have a column removal if the homeowner decides to let me. I sort of expect the exterior wood is decorative and cement or metal rod is inside? Just asking....

The guy's carpenter/contractor said it was load bearing but honestly, the design was a joke, if you ask me, all of the columns are hollow, completely hollow, and the wood that made up the column was kinda thin. I would have wanted a 4 x 4 or 6 x 6 in the middle, but that's me.

I asked the guy if it was load bearing and if so they needed to support the area before I preceded, which they did.
