carpenter bee drone congregation area?
« on: April 02, 2007, 08:34:03 am »
A while ago some one posted a couple of pictured of a bumblebee drone they caught.  I found a site with hundreds of carpenter bee drones buzzing about.  I am not sue if it was like a drone congregation area, or whether they just collect around nests.  Either way, it was fascinating to watch.  The drone tend to hover almost motionless and seem to claim territory. If another drone comes to close they chase them off, sometimes leading to fights. Once the rival is chased off, they come right back to their spot to hover. I even found a few drone that got their wish (dying wish if they are like honey bees :P ). It was very interesting, and I took a bunch of pictures and even some video and posted it on my blog (topbarbees.wordpress.com/2007/04/01/carpenter-bees-in-spring/).  Sorry, I can't make it a link yet, not enough posts.
