Hi everyone, I have been reading through this forum for almost a week now in my spare time, and I must say that I am very impressed with the people who frequent this site and their knowledge........... AND, that JP, he and his partner of the day are way too cool.:-)
Currently, and for the past 25 years I have been a concrete contractor, and for the last five years have been looking for another line of work. Dealing with employees, other contractors, and just a lot of people in general I have to deal with frequently really got me to look for something else. I wanted to do something that just depended on me, no more counting on employees and other people so that I can do my thing so to speak.
Now, I am a second year beek. Started with 2 hives last year, one made it over the winter, one didn't. This year, I wanted to work 12 hives, but am up to 14 hives thanks to two swarm captures. Next year, I want to have at least 50 if I can keep a decent survival rate over the long winter. If that works out, who knows how many I will have in five years. This is the greatest vocation out there. I sure wish I would have discovered it a long time ago as it seems these fuzzy, nasty stinging, honey and pollen collectors are way more fun to deal with than most people these days. AND I don't have to count on just me!!!!!
I am looking forward to spending countless hours on this forum in the future.

Joel, Welcome to the forum. Be careful this forum can become addicting. I am a newer beek than you and started with two hives this spring although I now have two hives and two nucleus hives wich I hope to winter. I am also involved in concrete although from the inspection side not placement or production. Enjoy your new adventure.

bud1, Redfield huh? A friend of mine from high school owns the big steakhouse/restaurant and lounge on main street. I'll ask about Bruce next chance I get. He is a few hours from me. Great pheasant hunting up there too.
I did get a load of information and a heck of a work-out today helping a local guy that's running 1800 hives this year. We pulled 9 pallets of supers from 4 yards in under eight hours today. NOW, I just need to find out how to get the nasty smell of the stuff we used to drive the bees from the supers off of me, someone will be sleeping on the couch till then.

HI Joel, Hi from Redfield ,that smell from Bee-Go is kinda like skunk smell ,it's nasty and allmost impossable to get rid of it. If you get up this way stop by ,the honey house is on the east side of town. Bruce ''redbee''
