JRS1939 Introduction
« on: July 01, 2012, 07:38:44 am »
My wife and I just purchased a home in the edge of the country north of Houston about three weeks ago. We are both over 70 years old. The house sits on 1 1/2 acres. We are just staring to move. In driving around the subdivision, I noticed that one of the houses had several bee hives in the back. Since both my wife and I like honey, we thought that we may have at least one hive of our own. I have been cruising through Goggle to see BEE information and came across this site. This site probably has all the info I need. It will be a month or so before we have the time to deal with anything besides moving and getting setup, but having a bee hive sounds like something I would really like to do.

Welcome to the forum,JRS.  There is lots you can pick up on here in the threads and videos.  You can check into if there is a local bee club also.  You can also go to you tube and type in anything and get videos.  Good luck.

Beekeeping is a great hobby and my wife and I enjoy it. If you want to work with the bees, go for it!

What I tell people who want to keep bees just so they can get honey to eat--Go buy it in a store or from a beekeeper. There are lots of things that can go wrong and you really have to want to keep bees to be a beekeeper.

A friend of mine wanted to make money from beekeeping, but after a year and a half, gave up and moved on to something else.

Welcome and good luck! Larry

Welcome aboard JRS.  Lots of good folks here that you can bend the ear of. ;)  Go back and visit the folks with the bee hive(s), they might can tell you the "lay of the land" for your area...any type of restrictions, types of forage available, when the flows start, how many boxes you need for over-wintering, etc.,.  Beekeeping is "local"...though you can glean the basics of equipment and the husbandry of bees by general talk you will find that some things applicable to, say, New Hampshire will not exactly apply to you and your bees.  Having said that, www.beemaster.com is a wealth of information with folks ready to help you at the drop of a super, er, I meant hat.  :-D

Best wishes and have fun on ya'll's bee journey!!!!
