Ok here are some pictures at my attempt to build a TBH




Decided to go with a bottom entrance because of SHB



  used strips instead of triangles it was easier to groove top bar with equipment I have than to cut a 3/4x3/4 square into on a angle

with bees 4   ready for bees 2 Nucs 1 TBH  and if I don't find a job that number will keep growing unless I run out of lumber or the power get shut off lol

I don't have SHB, so please enlighten me.  What does a bottom entrance have to do with SHB?

I could be wrong but I have be told that the bottom entrance makes it easier for the bees to drag them out of the hive.

I've never seen it make any difference to them dragging anything else out of the hive...

you have given me an Idea I will build another one was going to do that anyway, and just use a top entrance and when I put bees in them next spring will see which one has the least amount of SHBs I really don't know myself and I guess that will be a good way to find out

I'm planning on building a TBH this or next weekend.  I have some ideas/drawings, but would still like to look at others.

Here is a couple I maintain. Maybe they can add to any design ideas.

The first link is to a traditional TBH that is as big as you can get. I built it with the suggestion that someone said 19 inches was the max for free hanging comb. It has 31 bars. You are not moving this without help.

The second link is a trench style TBH that uses standard frame tops. I like this setup with standard equipment because I can still super (as shown), and yet still have the bees raise all the brood in the natural comb below. This is an option for those who want to do a TBH with natural comb but don't want to build one. Its just 2 deep boxes with the sides cut off and then joined. It holds 21 frames.
