Title: Mary Beth's swarm
Post by: hardwood on March 09, 2012, 11:56:03 pm
This was a really nice sized swarm but the weather was nasty. Wet bees don't like to move much but we finally got them going. **Warning, some PG-13 language in the last scene**

Lol Scott.  That reminded me of a Looney Tunes episode w/her Daffy Duck.

Great catch.

Hey, I see you had a wet & sticky day! Great catch.

Maybe we'll do a commercial at Bud's for some of Mad Peggy's sweet & sticky bees.  :-D

I've been enjoying all of your videos checking out your channel on youtube.  Very entertaining and some great information.  I enjoy watching y'all work together and even involving your son.  Really cool.  My beekeeping mentor's favorite way to catch a swarm was with a plastic bucket like yours.  He drilled 1/8" holes all over it.  He was a pro at "herding" bees with his smoker.  When possible he'd cut the swarm, twig and all, from the tree, drop them in the bucket, seal it up, drive them home and hive them there.  You're only the second person I've seen do it that way.

Beyond, have you checked out the swarm buckets on a long pole? There's a couple of videos on here somewhere...maybe someone knows a link?

I've seen them but most folks only use them with a swarm high in a tree. My old mentor used buckets all the time.  Never shook a swarm into a hive body.  He's an electrician and kept the bucket on his work truck.  Ran into many swarms during his workday.  Kept a full smoker in the bucket in case he needed it.

Cool video scott. I don't think I would have done that in the rain.. too chicken!  I'm still waiting for the first swarm call.
