I saw honey bees!
« on: April 05, 2005, 09:34:59 pm »
As most of you know, my only hive died in March.

Today was a beautiful day, so after work, I was playing ball with my dog, which in this case means I was reading Bee Culture and tossing the ball for him.

Suddenly, there was a buzz... A familiar buzz. I walked over to a nuc I've set up as a possible swarm trap, and what do I see but two beatiful girls buzzing around it.

Are they wild? Is there another beekeeper nearby? They can't possibly be from my September swarm, can they?

It's good to see bees again!

I pulled a page out of BigRog's book today.  Light snow last night, but sunshine today.  I sat out by the hives with my... um.. errrr... not coffee!! madmax and I watched them for a while.  Didn't take em long to get back on the pollen express.  I didn't fool with them since madmax doesn't like it much when he is attacked by ornery bees.  Supposed to be 10 degrees warmer tomorrow, so I guess I will tear them down for a good look.  70 by Friday..... but rain or snow again Saturday... SHEESH!!!    I guess the drought is over.. just took 9 years!!

Lesli -   I would think that a september swarm would be dead by now after the winter that we had, but they don't pay me to think, only work.

There are always bees around.  I have seen honeybees in my neighborhood long before I was a beekeeper and casting off my own swarms.

I know, but the romantic in me hopes their the swarm my girl's cast last year. :)

The closest apiary I know of is way out of flying range. So maybe it's a feral hive living closer.

Don't forget THE SWARM THAT FOUND ME :) Now it lives in Virginia in the good hands of Bigrog - miracles do happen Lesli, never give up hoping that some homeless swarm feels your positive energy and comes your way.

I tried to find the original Swarm that found me post - ugh. But here is the Rog Visit :)

Concord, MA bees
« Reply #6 on: April 07, 2005, 05:06:26 pm »
I saw bees today that wern't mine!  On the way home from work I stopped at Arena Farms in Concord, MA and the HBs were working the hyacinths, grape hyacinths and tulips that were on display outside at the farm stand.    I could tell they were Concord bees, maybe even Jay's.  They were carrying  little muskets getting ready for the Patriot's day reinactment.

 :D  :)      :x  :o      :P

Are you sure they were mine MPK? Remember all mine have tags in case they get lost!

BTW, I went to school with John Arena! :D

OK Jay, maybe they weren't yours. in that case, they must have been the redcoats.  The British are coming! The British are coming!

... "If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,--
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm."....

Please allow me a small correction:
"The regulars are out! The regulars are out!"
You see, at this point in history, we were all still British. Although less and less of us were pleased about that fact.

Not because it was so terrible to be British. It's just that a British citizen in GB and a British citizen in the colonies were two very different things. Taxation without representation, ...... but I digress. Yes MPK, April 19 is right around the corner, and if I could do one of those wonderful little animated smilies that TwT is famous for, carrying an American flag, I would! :D

I am very grateful that, of all the places on the face of this vast beautiful earth I could have been born, I was born right here! :!:  :!:  :!:

....Born in Medford.   Lived 25 years in Somerville.  (Or Charlestown Neck).    When I was in grammer school we did so much on Revolutionary war history and now they teach next to nothing. April 19 should be a national holiday, it's not even mentioned on calendars.  I think it is more important that July 4th.

I hear you!! It drives me crazy that outside of Massachusetts, no one even knows what Patriots Day is!

Thats one of the really cool things about being a Concord Minuteman; We have an educational charter so we go into the schools (usually elementary) dressed in full colonial perioud clothes, playing our fifes and drums, and you should see the kids eyes pop out!!! :D  We give a brief historical presentation, and then take questions from the kids, and usually the teachers have to break it up for lack of time. Those kids NEVER run out of questions! It's always way too cool!! 8)
