Title: Finally started my own account after using my husbands forever!
Post by: ME Girl on April 22, 2012, 07:18:35 pm
Hey all,

After about a year of watching bee videos and reading comments on here with my husband I have decided to make my own account.  I love bees!  My grandfather was a bee keeper in Maine where I am from and now my husband has two hives.  I am finally getting my own hive for Mothers Day this year and I am so excited!  Finally my own bees!  I usually help my husband tend his hives and handle all the and crushing and straining (not enough hives yet to have an extractor).  I also like to make candles and I have been researching soap making.

I am currently living in PA but I am a Maine girl at heart.  Can't wait to talk bees with everyone!

Thanks again!  My grandfather was a beekeeper for a long time up in ME.  I guess it skipped a generation and now I am.  Growing up almost all of my science projects were about bees.  I remember my dad taking me out to an apiary and me just walking up to the hive with no fear.  They were really nice bees though. I can remember my father yelling at me to stay out of the flight path but the old bee keeper said "he had good girls that didn't mind that"  He took me by the hand and we walked up to the hives and he did an inspection on one of them and let me hold the frames full of bees.  I don't know if I would be so brave now but I just remember how interesting they were to watch.  I would really love and observation hive some day.

Welcome Mrs. CV bees. I was communicating with your husband the other day and forgot to ask, is your daughter still working the hives with you ?

Thank you very much, I appreciate that.  I don't feel they are up at the level of Hardwood, JP, or Schawee's but I really enjoy making and sharing them.

Hey Sparky

Yes my daughter and now my two boys are both interested in the bees.  My boys have no fear and will walk right up to the hive.  My daughter, not so much.  We still need to get a kids suit.  She wears mine (I'm only about 5 foot) when she goes out to check the girls with her dad.

We still would really like to meet.  We lost both of our hives 2 winters ago.  So we didn't have any bees last summer.  :( The we got a call about two rescues this spring and we have my package on the way so we will have three in total. :)  Hopefully all will go well this year.

What part of Maine did you used to live in ? We've got hives in So. Maine and as long as you can keep the bears at bay it's a good place to have hives.

I grew up in Dover-Foxcroft.  Ever heard of it?  It's up near Moose head lake.  It's about 40 minutes North of Bangor.  My grandfather used to keep bees down in Searsport.  He is tickled that I have started.  Said it was so good to have "real honey" again. ;)

I used to deer hunt in Milo and Howland many years ago. One of my ex-friends grew up in Searport and I think his family still lives there. We're bringing 7 hives to So. Maine this weekend and look forward to a good year up there. Hope you have a great year as well. :-D
